Father’s illness, poverty and persecution. Artur Barci¶ did not have an easy childhood. “We had nothing to eat”

Artur Barci¶ is one of the most liked and respected Polish actors, and his comedic roles are permanently etched in the memory of the audience. Although his road to fame was marked by suffering, his difficult childhood, numerous illnesses and poverty did not prevent him from fulfilling his dreams.

Tadeusz Norek in or Arkadiusz Czerepach in are the characters for which the viewers fell in love with him. However, these are only two of Artur Barciś’s many roles. The actor can boast of a rich artistic output, which consists of numerous television and film productions. In addition, he has been performing regularly on theater stages for years. Although he made his professional debut over four decades ago, his adventure with the stage began when he was still a small boy.

When he went to school, he lived with his grandmother. He inherited his talent from his father

Even though he did not come from an artistic family, he was exposed to art from an early age. His mother was the manager of a daycare center in Mykanów, and the future father ran an amateur theater there. They instilled in him passion and love for the stage, especially his father, from whom Barciś inherited talent and comedy skills. In an interview with Zwierciadło, the artist confessed that he loved spending time with him and watching him perform simple everyday activities. Unfortunately, they didn’t always get along. The father was domineering, could not stand opposition and did not enter into discussions with his sons. – It’s supposed to be as I say and that’s it – his words Barciś.

The family lived in the countryside and ran their own farm, which prospered sometimes better, and sometimes worse. Young Artur was not too eager to help, and he used his health problems to avoid his duties. Due to the fact that his parents assumed that he could not do all the work, he mostly tended cows, which he honestly hated. He found it a tedious and tiring job, so he usually devoted himself to reading during this time. “Suddenly I realized it was dark and the cow was gone,” he said with a laugh. His grandmother taught him to read before he even went to school. For the future, it was a springboard from the gray reality.

When Barciś entered kindergarten, he moved to his grandmother, who lived 8 km from his family home in Rędziny. The parents decided to take this step because the woman working at the ticket office at the time was unable to take care of three demanding boys. “We all had to help our parents in the fields, as in the countryside, and I was weak, sickly, allergic to a lot of things,” he explained in the same interview.

Father’s illness and poverty. Artur Barciś’s childhood was marked by suffering

Unfortunately, then there were also serious family problems. The actor’s father fell ill with tuberculosis and was forced to quit his job. He also did not farm, and the food of the whole family rested on the shoulders of Barciś’s mother, who was also unwell. The woman was employed on the railway, but she earned pennies. — I remember that there was poverty, that we could not afford anything — Barciś remembers the past in Kamil Dreck’s book “An actor must act to live”. The family income was small and they lived on what they managed to grow on a small patch of field. – It was the worst in the early harvest, when the potatoes and flour ran out and we had nothing to eat – recalled the actor.

Then the actor’s mother decided that he and his brothers should go to a preventive treatment facility near Jelenia Góra. She was afraid that Arthur, prone to infection, would catch tuberculosis from his father, and she wanted to spare her son suffering at all costs. Unfortunately, he did not remember his stay in the center very well. Locked in an old, post-German building, the boys couldn’t find their way around, because they were used to freedom and liberty that had been taken away from them there.

The stage was his safe place. From an early age, he knew he wanted to be an actor

Although he was not interested in farming, he was drawn to the stage from an early age. Singing and reciting poems made him feel like a fish out of water. He didn’t have it easy at school. He was teased because of his small stature. Older colleagues often humiliated him in front of others. Barciś did not feel support or understanding, which often made him unhappy among his peers, but when this usually shy boy and the object of mockery of his older colleagues began the performance, he focused the audience’s full attention. — My youthful drive (…) came from the fact that I really did not want to be. I wanted to be – Barciś explained his passion for acting in “Zwierciadło”. Then he also noticed that sensitivity, which he considered his curse, has a positive value.

Despite many twists and turns in life, Artur Barciś never gave up. He knew that the stage was his place, because it was on it that he felt safe and understood. Acting was his life’s passion, which is why he entered the theater school exams with his soul on his shoulder. The decision turned out to be a success and he was accepted as a student of the Łódź Film School, which he successfully graduated in 1979. Although today he is one of the most popular Polish actors and works with the best in the industry, he has never forgotten what path he had to go through to be where he is now.
