The life of LGBT+ people in Poland is not so sweet, even on Fat Thursday. #DonutGiveUpChallenge is more than just eating a donut. The challenge initiated by the members of the Equaversity Foundation in social media is to increase the awareness of the international community about the problems faced by people discriminated against in Poland due to gender identity and orientation. Stars of the silver screen and sports (e.g. Olympic medalists Tom Daley and Adam Rippon) who take part in it convince people to make donations to the foundation’s account.
Polish stars shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQ+ community
Of the Polish celebrities, director Agnieszka Holland, actor and theater director Andrzej Seweryn and Canadian model and actor of Polish descent Antoni Porowski decided to take part in the #DonutGiveUpChallenge challenge. They shared the recordings via Instagram and each of them explains why they decided to take action. Andrzej Seweryn, who played the main role in the first drama series with a drag queen theme, explains his participation as follows:
Did you know that 70% of of the LGBT community in Poland experienced violent behavior? Their life is not sweet at all
This is what Olimpia Kastrau, who coordinates the campaign on behalf of the Equaversity Foundation, says about the #DonutGiveUpChallenge campaign:
The campaign aims to increase public awareness of the rights of LGBT+ people in Poland. The campaign is aimed at European and North American countries where human rights are respected and where they may not be aware of the scale of violations and aggression faced by the LGBT+ community in our country. We want to live in Poland, where everyone has the freedom to express themselves as they are, and does not have to be afraid of local ostracism
You too can take part in the challenge!
Record your attempt to eat a donut without licking your lips and post it on social media tagging #DonutGiveUpChallenge and Equaversity Foundation. Whether you succeed or not, donate to the Equaversity Foundation and challenge at least three friends. When publishing, take the opportunity to raise awareness of the problem of homophobia in Polish society and add data from reports on the situation of the LGBT+ community in Poland, e.g. “three out of four young LGBT+ people declare that they have suicidal thoughts” or “almost 70% of LGBT+ in Poland have experienced violence “. These and other shocking data are presented in the Papaya Films video “On the other side of the rainbow” published on the foundation’s website: .
