The director of “Mindhunter” explains why the series will not return to Netflix

After years of uncertainty, all Mindhunter fans can be sure that the second season of the series was the last. Creator and director David Fincher explained why the third season of the production will not be made. He stated that “Mindhunter” was simply too expensive for Netflix.

The crime series “Mindhunter” debuted on the streaming giant’s offer in 2017. It tells the story of two FBI agents – Holden (Jonathan Groff) and Bill (Holt McCallany), who in the 1970s formed a unit using groundbreaking behavioral analysis techniques to catch serial killers. The series is based on the 1995 book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

Costs turned out to be higher than viewership

The production has a second season, which premiered in 2019. It was later rumored that the series would not continue after production stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv were released from their existing contracts in January 2020. However, its production was suspended indefinitely.

Now everything is clear. Executive producer and director of seven episodes, David Fincher, told Le Journal du Dimanche that the series was too expensive for Netflix and would not be continued:

I’m very proud of the first two seasons, but it’s a particularly expensive show, and in Netflix’s eyes, we haven’t attracted enough audiences to justify such an investment.

However, Fincher is not angry with the site’s directors. Later in the conversation, he said, “I don’t blame them, they took a risk to run the series.” In an interview with Coolider, season two director Andrew Dominik confessed that there were already ideas for a third series set in Los Angeles:

This would be the season everyone has really been waiting for as the heroes come out of the basement and go to work

The decision on Mindhunter ties in with what Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently told Bloomberg about the cancellation of the series. “The key to success is that you have to be able to talk to a small audience on a small budget and a large audience on a big budget. If you do it right, you can do it as long as you want” – Sarandos.
