On Friday, June 13, 1980, in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, Candy Montgomery murdered her friend Betty Gore. When Candy took Betty’s life, the victim’s one-year-old daughter was in the next room. they met at church, and although they were seemingly very different, they got along well and quickly became friends. Betty was more withdrawn, kept to the side and spoke little, while Candy was considered a lively woman who was everywhere. What they had in common, however, was that both were unhappy in their marriages. They spent a lot of time together and helped each other with household chores and childcare.

Things got complicated when Betty became pregnant with her second child in 1978. A friend had an affair with her husband, Alan. Betty and Alan’s marriage was not going well, and although Candy had no remorse towards her friend, Alan did not feel comfortable cheating on his wife. In the end, he decided to break off contact with his mistress. He wanted to save his marriage, so he and his wife signed up for couples therapy at the church. Tormented by guilt, the man confessed to his wife of infidelity. And that may have been a mistake Betty paid with her life.

Betty Gore decided to confront her friend when her husband was away on a business trip. She hoped that Candy would confess the truth and admit to having an affair with her husband. Candy came to visit, and Betty invited her to the utility room belonging to the house and asked about the affair with Alan. The women argued and a fight ensued. Candy claimed she grabbed the ax in self-defense. She gave her friend 41 blows. Candy killed Betty but was not convicted of the crime. The experts determined that as a result of trauma from the past, the woman suffered from uncontrollable outbursts of aggression. She was acquitted. She and her husband moved to Georgia, but divorced a few months later. Candy lives away from the media today, although she regularly receives offers from journalists and film producers.
