The third episode of the series presents the story of Bill and Frank, who found support in each other in times of plague. The story of men making love aroused much controversy among viewers around the world, but many fans of the series praise the decision of the producers who decided to develop this thread. It was only slightly scratched in the game.
We can read in it Justyna’s opinion, which called the love story “so warm, human and endearing, set in a world overrun by mushroom zombies”. Turns out this thread did a lot more good than we thought.
One viewer of “The Last of Us” shared his poignant story on the site:
I am bisexual living in a country where being gay is punishable by death and as you can imagine my life is miserable, I had suicidal thoughts for a while until I planned to commit suicide for my 20th birthday which is a few days away
The boy did not tell exactly what he was planning, but he emphasized that at the time when he planned to end his life, many people in his country were outraged by the story of a male-male couple presented in the third episode of “The Last of Us”. He played the game in the past, but did not watch the series, and decided to check out what new developers have introduced to the plot:
But while I was planning my suicide something happened, The Last of Us Episode 3 debuted. All the homophobic people in my country were pissed off for some reason and I was confused until I found out there was a whole episode on the show featuring a gay couple. I played the original game and I know Bill is gay and I didn’t think the show would focus on that. The fact that they did this is one of the most daring choices made on the show
The viewer completely did not expect that the creators of the series would present this thread in such a way. After watching the third episode, he stated that he found some similarities between himself and Bill, who had to create “mental fences and traps” to separate himself from other people. It was thanks to this séance that he changed his mind. The 20-year-old is still not feeling well, but now believes he will be able to overcome his problems:
Don’t get me wrong, I still feel like shit but now I’m confident that I will get through this and that I will finally be happy in life and that I will never give up on life
This story shows that such threads in movies and series are extremely necessary. They show viewers that sexual minorities live and love like all people and give comfort to people who struggle in real life. Contrary to what the opponents of introducing topics with sexual minorities to pop culture say, the representation of LGBTQ+ people in films and series can only bring a lot of good.
