Two F-16 pilots, friends Nikodem and Bogdan, compete for the heart of the beautiful Marta and for which of them will fly into space. Niko wins the space competition, but due to an unexplained malfunction, he returns from the mission only after 30 years. Despite the passage of years on Earth, the age of the surviving cosmonaut stopped on the day of launch. While Niko only thinks about Marta, the world wants to know the secret of his eternal youth – this is the description of the series “Girl and Cosmonaut” directed by Bartosz Prokopowicz with a script by Agata Malesińska. The action of the six-episode production takes place in 2023 and 2053, therefore some roles are played by two different actors.

Producer Olga Cerkaska talks about the process of selecting the right actresses and actors for the main roles: When we started working with our casting director, Marta Kownacka, together with Bartek Prokopowicz, we had our visions of what the main characters of the series should look like. We felt that we needed lovers for the roles of two competing pilots, and that it was going to be a big challenge. However, when we saw and heard Jędrek Hycnar, who looked like James Dean, at one of the castings, we knew we had our Niko. Although he is very young, he has an amazing maturity that is so much needed for this role, due to the complicated fate of the hero. It was only after the fact, while working together, that I found out that Jędrek is a dad, which in fact further justified his maturity.

This role also required a solid physical training – the actor gained 8 kilograms, he trained, among others, in the gym. boxing, diving and motorcycling. Hycnar recalls:
One of the most challenging, but also exciting moments in the production of “Girls and Cosmonauts” for me were the scenes in the g-centrifuge, a kind of flight simulator in which anti-g maneuvers are practiced. First, however, I had a series of fitness tests at the Military Institute of Aviation Medicine in Warsaw, and then I was in 7G overload. It was an absolutely amazing experience that simply cannot be described in words.

– In turn, we chose Kuba Sasak for the role of Bogdan. His inner peace and composure, in a certain way, and quite consciously, we oppose the image of a “bad-boy”, i.e. Jędrek. Both Jędrek and Kuba are our really big discoveries, emphasizes Cerkaska. And what does it say about Marta, who forms a triangle with these heroes?
The young Marta, Vanessa Alexander, immediately captivated us with her smile, cheeky and disarming, just like Julia Roberts. The fact that Vanessa also has something in common with Magda Cielecka, who plays a mature version of Marta, only made it easier for us to make the final decision.

The cast of the six-episode series also includes m.in. Andrzej Chyra and Magdalena Boczarska. For important supporting roles, the creators chose actors of Ukrainian origin – Daria Polunina and Andriy Zhuravsky. – These are incredibly talented young people who immediately entered their new series incarnations. Daria is a completely phenomenal actor, but also has a very original beauty that perfectly matched our vision of the future – says the producer.
