Harry Styles “consciously privileged as a man” at the Brit Awards. No women were nominated in his category

The Brit Awards 2023 gala took place last Saturday at the O2 Arena in London. The ceremony was hosted by British comedian Mo Gilligan. The biggest winner turned out to be Harry Styles – winner of awards in all categories in which he was nominated. However, he was remembered not only for his success. The media cite the singer’s speech, where he drew attention to the gender disparities of the people he competed with.

Brit Awards statuettes are awarded in fifteen categories. In four of them, the former One Direction musician, who today successfully develops a solo career, triumphed – Harry Styles. Not only did he receive the most important title of the Artist of the Year, but also his new album – “Harry’s House”, was recognized as the album of the year. He is also the author of the best song – “As It Was”, as well as the winner in the Pop / R&B category. In his speech, however, he pointed out that he was unable to fully enjoy the win because of the sense of injustice – he competed only with men for the title of Artist of the Year. Women appeared on the list in other categories, but they were in the minority.

I am really very grateful for that, but also aware of how privileged I am today. This award is dedicated to Rina, Charli, Florence, Mabel and Becky.

he said, listing the names of female artists who had been omitted from the main category. Charli XCX was later photographed wearing a “True Winner” T-shirt at the Brit Awards afterparty. One Direction fans were also surprised that Styles thanked his former bandmates. “Without you, I wouldn’t be here,” he confessed as he took the statuette.

Women can feel like winners too

While many people appreciated Styles’ appeal, just as many criticized it. It was noted that at the Grammys Awards (the artist won the gold gramophone for album of the year, winning with Beyoncé), the singer said that “such an honor does not come to people like him very often”. The statement sounded extremely unfortunate because Styles was the 33rd white male to be awarded, which would mean that the situation is not all that rare.

What’s more, during the Brit Awards, which Styles criticized for underestimating women, women triumphed many times. While it’s true that no Artist of the Year nominations were made this year, they made the list in every other category, including those in which Styles was nominated. Female indie-rock group Wet Leg competed for Album of the Year, song of the year – incl. DJ Eliza Rose and vocalist Kim Petras, and the Pop/R&B lineup included Cat Burns, Charlie XCX and Dua Lipa. The “Rising Star” award went to the female group Flo, the title of Best New Artist – the aforementioned Wet Leg, and Beyoncé was awarded in two international categories.
