The president of the Hollywood Academy, Janet Yanghas admitted that the organization mismanaged the case of the slap Will Smith gave Chris Rock during the ceremony of Oscars 2022.

“What we experienced last year was unacceptable and our response was not up to par. It was a turning point to act with greater transparency and responsibility,” Yang said at the 2023 Oscar nominees luncheon.

The Hollywood Academy did not take action until days later, when vetoed Will Smith to participate in the Oscar ceremony for the next ten years. The president has now admitted that the organization’s response was “inadequate” and that in moments of crisis it was necessary to act with “speed, compassion and decision” in favor of the cinematographic sector.

“This is a family and the values ​​of faith, unity and solidarity between the industry and the spectators”, added the president, who assured that the Academy has “learned from its mistakes”.
