COAC 2023: order of performance of the first session of the semifinal of the Carnival of Cádiz

There is less and less to know the name of the best chirigotas, comparsas, choirs and quartets of the Carnival of Cádiz. This Monday the semifinal phase begins, after the second phase of the Official Contest of Carnival Groups (COAC) came to an end over the weekend, the quarterfinal, leaving out 25 of the 53 that had reached the quarterfinals. In this phase, which lasts three days, they are 28 groups that have managed to advance to a phase in which they will add the points obtained to those they had already obtained in the previous pass. The first to open not only the first session but the semifinal phase of the COAC is a choir, the largest group (in number of members) of the Contest. That of Luis Rivero does it, another year, by the hand of Juan Manuel Moreno Gandul, with whom he shares the creation of the lyrics and music of The voicea choir that under the name of Químbara took the second prize in the 2022 COAC edition. It is followed by the chirigota Cádiz, how beautiful you are with your fucking mother (the bipolars)which has managed to reach the semifinal despite being a newly created joke, with lyrics by Miguel Ángel Ríos Perez and Víctor Jurado Escandón.

The third parties to act this Monday are the ones that may make it more difficult for the rest of the modality’s groups: the comparsa with which Antonio Martínez Ares arrives at the COAC in 2023, La ciudad invisible, will try to revalidate the first prize of the COAC of 2022. After those of Martínez Ares is the turn of the chirigota Those of the verdictone of the favorites of this edition, according to the scores of the unofficial juries, to later give way to a choir that comes to Cádiz directly from Barbate and that in 2022 stayed in this phase, those of the port, under the direction of José Manuel Cardoso.

The troupe The chalk auntwith an important female presence and moved to the rhythm of the music of one of the ‘greats’ of the Cadiz Carnival, José Mari Barranco, the Lazio, is the next to sound. Lazio is behind other groups in the COAC, including La chirigota del Lazio, who stayed in the quarterfinal phase, but also from The chirigota of the ravinewhich is the one that follows on this carnival Monday.

The last two to participate today are the comparsa The spell of Cádizwhich in 2022 took second prize in the modality despite the fact that this group, by Antonio Jesús Pérez Piru and Sergio Guillen Tomato, has been participating in the Contest for less than five years, and the Los Martínez choir. The latter continues to participate in the COAC despite the fact that its composer, Julio Pardo, passed away last Saturday. The Cádiz City Council, in fact, decreed a day of official mourning for his death, after finding an administrative formula to “be able to do it without having to suspend the carnival acts” on Saturday.
