The honorary benefit is granted ex officio to seniors who have reached the age of 100. It’s extra money they get until they retire. Its amount is determined every year, and once granted, it does not change, even in the case of increases. This means that not all centenarians will receive PLN 500 more.

Honorary benefit for seniors. Not everyone can get a raise

Seniors who are 100 years old can count on additional money in the form of the so-called an honorary benefit, which is paid monthly and for life. People who receive social security benefits are granted ex officio, while seniors who do not have a pension or old-age pension and are over 100 should submit an application – in person or by proxy.

Although this year the honorary benefit will be higher by almost PLN 500, not everyone will benefit from the increase. Why? – Once awarded, the additional pension does not change and is paid for life in the same amount – ZUS spokesman Paweł Żebrowski once explained. Since this principle has not changed, it means that seniors who have already been granted a benefit in a lower amount cannot count on its increase.

Who won’t get a raise? “It’s unfair”

From March 1, 2022 to the end of February 2023, the honorary allowance is PLN 4,944.79 gross. Currently, about 2,700 people take them. According to , already on March 1 this year, it is to increase by almost PLN 500, and more precisely to PLN 5,540.25 gross per month. However, only the “new” centenarians will benefit from the increase. – It’s not fair – said Dr. Antoni Kolek from the Pension Institute in an interview with “Fact”. The specialist emphasizes that there is no legal basis that would regulate the payment of benefits of this type.

Although the problem is also noticed by the Sejm lawyers, the family ministry rejected the proposal to valorise the honorary benefit.
