Carlos Saura was a director, writer, film producer and actor. He was born on January 4, 1932 and came from an artistic family. His mother was a pianist, and his older brother, Antonio Saura, is a famous expressionist painter. Carlos became interested in cinema and the art of film as a teenager, and his adventure with art began with photography. He even dropped out of the engineering department to study film directing and journalism.

He started his career with short documentaries, and already his first feature film “Los golfos” brought him international recognition. It premiered in 1960 at the Cannes International Film Festival.

He made films criticizing the regime of General Franco, which meant that he had constant problems with censorship. His first paintings were clearly in line with the trend of Spanish neorealism. In his works, he often dealt with topics such as death, passing, loneliness, the impact of dreams and memories on reality, and family breakdown. In addition, he was famous for intertwining his films with motifs strongly related to Spanish culture. In the later stage of his work, he especially focused on dance and music.

His films have won many international awards. At Cannes, he was awarded the Special Prize twice for the films “Cousin Angelica” from 1973, as well as for “Feed the Ravens”, shot three years later. “Faster, Faster” from 1981 brought him the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. He received the Silver Bear for directing the film “Hunt” from 1966 and “Frozen Peppermint” from 1967. Three of his films received Oscar nominations: “Mama Turns 100” (1979), “Carmen” (1984) and the famous “Tango” (1979). 1998). He also won a BAFTA award for “Carmen”.

He was married three times – he had two sons with his first wife, Adela Medrano, and three more with Mercedes Perez. For many years he was in an informal relationship with the actress Geraldine Chaplin, with whom he fathered a son named Shane. From the relationship with his third wife, Eulalia Ramon, a daughter Anna was born.
