Film director Carlos Saura dies, one day before receiving the honorary Goya

Director Carlos Saura has passed away this Friday at the age of 91, one day before the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences awarded him the Goya de Honor in Seville. The film director was in poor health since the fall he suffered last September and which prevented him from going personally to the Zinemaldia in Donostia-San Sebastián.

Carlos Saura was born in Huesca in 1932. He became fond of photography as a teenager and abandoned his studies in Industrial Engineering to study at the Institute of Cinematographic Research and Experiences in Madrid, where he obtained a diploma in Film Direction.

His first film work was the short film sunday afternoonmade in 1957. A year later, his documentary Basin was awarded at the Zinemaldia. This work was followed by his first feature film the gulfs (1960).

Throughout his professional career he has left masterpieces such as Breeding ravens (1975), Elisa, my life (1977), made together with Elias Querejeta, Ay Carmela! (1990) and The Seventh Day (2004). The last work of him, the walls speakpremiered on February 3.
