Confusion around the 13th pension. Will it be tax exempt?

The thirteenth pension is an additional benefit to financially support retirees, and transfers are planned for April. certainly pleased that this year’s payments are to be record-breaking and amount to PLN 1,588.44 gross. How much money will they actually receive? It turns out that although there are only a few weeks left until the payouts, the issue is still not resolved.

Last year, both the 13th and 14th pensions were tax-free. In practice, this meant that seniors received larger payments in hand. Unfortunately, these regulations were in force only in 2022, which means that if this were to be the same, the government would have to issue a new regulation. Will that happen?

Seniors can receive up to PLN 200 less. There is still no clear decision

The thirteenth pension is unlikely to be exempt from tax. – We are not working on such regulations – said on Thursday deputy finance minister Artur SoboĊ„, quoted by . The politician was to admit that last year’s regulation was an exception due to the introduction of the Polish Deal. This means that seniors are likely to receive lower 13th pension amounts than initially assumed.

According to the regulations, only benefits up to PLN 2,500 gross are exempt from tax. And this means, as calculated by the fact.pl portal, that people who receive up to PLN 794 gross will not have to pay tax on the “thirteen”. Everyone who gets more will pass the set threshold. As the “thirteen” portal calculates, it can therefore amount to PLN 1,254.80 to PLN 1,445.48 per hand. If it were exempt from tax, everyone would receive the same amount, i.e. PLN 1,445.48. This means that some seniors can get almost PLN 200 net less.

Despite the words of the deputy finance minister, not everything is lost yet. The letter on the exemption of “thirteen” from the tax went to the prime minister’s desk, who has a decisive opinion on the matter.
