Sadowska, after criticizing “Girls from Dubai”, thanks for solidarity. “And what about solidarity with you?”

The role of women in the film industry has been increasingly emphasized in recent years, e.g. in the context of awarding prestigious awards and nominations. Maria Sadowska also referred to the importance of highlighting the representation of this gender in the artistic environment during the Empik Bestsellers gala.

The gardener argues

The director stated that women are not as successful as men, and the success of “Girls from Dubai” has a chance to change that. Dawid Ogrodnik referred to her words when he presented the statuette in one of the categories.

It seems to me that women have already made high-budget films, a certain Agnieszka Holland, Anna Kazejak, who is sitting here. But I can agree to one thing, certainly not in such a discriminatory way.

– the actor known from “Johnny” and “The Last Family” was ironic, referring to the subject of the film. “Girls from Dubai” is an erotic-sensational drama adapted from Piotr Krysiak’s book of the same title devoted to the Dubai scandal. The main character is a young lady for the company of Arab sheikhs, who recruits Polish misses, celebrities, actresses and models to also take up this job. The cast included Jan Englert and Katarzyna Figura, and Doda was responsible for the production and music.

Kick in the belly

Sadowska commented on Ogrodnik’s words in a short interview during the gala, when she briefly stated that the actor “cut her wings” with his statement. However, this thought was later developed in an entry published on Instagram. “It’s hard to enjoy the reward when you get a kick in the stomach right away,” she wrote. The actress is of the opinion that the depreciation of her achievements as a woman and criticism of the production are further proof of the legitimacy of the topics she tackles.

We women are still being judged harshly. Mr. Ogrodnik, publicly assessing my film as discriminatory – he himself discriminated against me and all its creators. Interestingly, this is a film about a patriarchal system that cannot be outsmarted, which punishes and destroys women who try to play on men’s terms.

she wrote. She added that if the film had been about gangsters or murderers rather than escorts, “no one would judge either the creators or the content in that way.”

AVANTI24 OFFERS:

Mr. Ogrodnik does not know the realities, numbers and experiences of me and my friends. Apparently he didn’t understand what I was saying. He doesn’t know how difficult it is to get money for a film and convince investors, mostly men. I am talking here mainly about the production cinema, which is governed by its own rules.

– she accused the actor of not knowing the industry. However, she emphasized that she appreciated the activities and skills of Ogrodnik, and even won him an award for the main male role at the Gdynia Film Festival.

“Is every criticism an attack on women?”

Sadowska also referred to words about women who had already been successful in the industry. She recognized Agnieszka Holland as “a person absolutely beyond competition” and an inspiration for all female directors; She also greeted her colleagues in the profession, incl. Małgorzata Szumowska, Agnieszka Smoczyńska and Jagoda Szelc.

No matter what you talk about and how you talk about it – I hope you won’t have to feel like I did today and you will always be able to enjoy your awards and achievements.

– she finished her speech and thanked for “words of comfort and solidarity”. Commentators, however, are of the opinion that it is difficult to identify with the director’s work, and they compare the subject matter to the production of the controversial Patryk Vega.

What about sympathizing with you? In defense of a weak film whose criticism you perceive as an attack on a woman?

Now any criticism will argue that it is an attack on women.

– write Internet users and recognize that the commercial success of the film is not an indicator of its quality. Let us remind you that it was the most watched production in 2021 – over a million viewers watched it in Polish cinemas, for which it was awarded the Amber Lion. Despite considerable popularity, critics assess the substantive value worse – the average rating on the Filmweb website is 4.9 on a ten-point scale.
