John Cleese returns to “Hotel Zacisze”. Fans have been waiting for this for over 40 years

Monty Python star John Cleese will once again play the role of the screenwriter and the main character. The actor will reprise his role as the owner of the eponymous establishment, Basil Fawlty, who is sarcastic and not very nice to customers. This time in the series, his companion will not be Prunella Scales, who played the wife named Sybil.

The most famous on-screen hotel will return with new episodes

In the continuation of the series on the screen we will see the actor’s daughter Camille, who, as in real life, will be the daughter of the main character. For many years, Basil did not know of its existence, and now they will join forces to run a boutique hotel together.

The first two seasons of “Hotel Zacisze” consisted of only 6 episodes each, and their broadcast lasted from 1975 to 1979. That was enough to make the series a permanent fixture in television history. In 2000, the British Film Institute placed it at the top of the list of the 100 best British television programmes. In 2019, Radio Times named it Britain’s Greatest Sitcom.

The series was created by Cleese and his then-wife Coonie Booth. It presents the funny adventures of the employees of a suburban hotel in Torquay. The owner of this not very luxurious place is the easygoing Basil Fawlty, who does not shy away from biting remarks towards guests, which leads to many interesting situations. The cast also featured Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs, Gilly Flower and Ballard Berkeley.

The lead actor is known for his reluctance to “cancel culture”, i.e. the culture of invalidation, which consists in excluding something from the public life of the community in response to exceeding the applicable norm. According to the actor, this process has a disastrous effect on modern comedy.

In 2020, the BBC decided to remove one of the episodes of the series from its streaming service, because there were fragments in which the characters used racist language. John Cleese then commented on the broadcaster’s decision with harsh words: “Cowards, they have no balls and they are contemptible.” After this statement, the episode of the series soon returned to the service’s offer.
