After almost a decade since the creation of the cult game, HBO Max has created with the same title. One of the fathers of the game, Neil Druckmann, and screenwriter, Craig Mazin, are responsible for the creation of the project. The first two episodes were positively received by the viewers, but the third significantly differs from the well-known plot line. In the official podcast, the creators explain why and reveal what disease Frank struggled with.

The creators of the game did not devote too much time to the story of Frank and Bill. The thread about their relationship was presented only partially and was more of a diversion than an important issue for the course of the plot. In the series available on the HBO Max platform, the situation is quite different, and the entire third episode is devoted to telling the fate of the characters. Although the touching story of Frank and Bill differs from the outline presented in the game, Druckmann and Mazin made sure that the ending of the plot was faithful to the original.

In the third episode of the series, there is a significant departure from the plot line known from the game. Frank, although younger than his beloved, suffers from an unexplained illness that makes him completely dependent on the help of others, and Bill takes care of him. is full of mysteries and unexplained threads that the creators of the series decided to explain in the podcast of the same name. Mazin talked about the vision that guided the creators and revealed why they did not say directly what ails Frank. “We didn’t necessarily want to make it clear to the public. It was either multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but it was a degenerative neuromuscular disorder. It happens. It happens so commonly, and at the same time so rarely – the screenwriter adds that usually film heroes die unexpectedly, and the cause is most often a sudden heart attack. In the case of Frank, the reasons for his death suggest themselves.

Druckmann, on the other hand, explained that developing the story of the two men’s relationship was quite a challenge. The creator confessed that the story was shaped for a long time, but ultimately all considerations led them to the conclusion that it is worth telling the fate of these heroes in this way.
