As recently reported by the Catholic Information Agency, there are currently eight hermits and one hermit living in Poland (for comparison, in 2018 there were four hermits and two hermits). These people live according to rules that describe the exact schedule of the day.
Both a spiritual person and a lay person who has turned 30 can become a hermit. However, in our country, the vast majority of women who have chosen this way of life are nuns. On the other hand, preparation for hermit life usually takes about 10 years. The formation takes place under the direction of the person responsible for the eremitical life in a given diocese and is individual in nature.
– The formation is multifaceted, spread over several years. It’s about deepening spiritually, theologically, but also in life – told KAI, Fr. prelate Tomasz Rusiecki.
Who are the modern hermits?
Although modern hermits live in solitude, they do not completely isolate themselves from other people. – The hermit does not despise the world, he has no negative attitude towards science, people and society. He does not treat hermit life as an escape from the world. A hermit is a thinking, reflective man who appreciates the creative achievements of mankind in the field of knowledge about man. He wants to grow up quickly, faster than others, to take responsibility for his own life, to give it a beautiful shape.
What is their everyday life like?
Hermits have their own hermitages. These are out-of-the-way places, sparsely populated. Importantly, they are to live in them until death. Their everyday life consists of studying works on spirituality and theology that aim to create an intellectual basis for a spiritual life in solitude. It is primarily learning and practicing contemplative prayer in silence for two hours a day.
“It’s not a lonely choice”
Recently, this formation has become famous in the media due to an event. A few months ago at the Cathedral of St. Stanisław Kostka in Lodz, Sr. Anuncjata and Sr. Maria Teresa became hermits. During the wedding of the Rev. Grzegorz Ryś, Metropolitan of Łódź, stated that hermit life:
This is not a choice of solitude, it is a choice of communion with Jesus in His Body and Blood, and thus it is a choice of communion with the whole Church.
