“Press”: Wiktory 2023 will not take place. TVP withdraws after last year’s scandal

Wiktory are awards of the Television Academy, which are awarded to outstanding personalities from the world of television – or at least that’s the assumption. The statuettes were awarded in the years 1985-2015, and then the awarding was abandoned for several years. The re-organization of the gala was resumed in 2022, when Jacek Kurski was in charge of Telewizja Polska. However, not everything went his way then, because there was a lot of controversy around the awards even before they were handed out.

Mass disapproval of the Wiktors

The ceremony was boycotted by a large part of the artistic community and many journalists. However, the biggest stir was caused by Sting’s cancellation of the performance. At first, the British musician was not aware that TVP could be perceived as a government propaganda tube. It was only his friend, director Małgorzata Szumowska, who realized it.

Journalist and reporter Mariusz Szczygieł was one of the first to appeal to Sting. He wrote on social media that the artist “authorizes and authenticates television, which has nothing to do with democratic free media.”

Wiktory 2021 boycotted i.a. such personalities as: Robert Makowicz, Monika Olejnik, Tomasz Raczek and Magda Moek. Maciej Stuhr, who was nominated in the Actor of the Year category, wrote on Facebook: “I could not with a clear conscience attend a party of a station that sows hatred.” Later, the actor performed at the National Stadium on one stage with Sting.

Many of the awardees did not appear at the gala. There was no Alicja Majewska, Andrzej Seweryn and Karol Strasburger, who received the Super Wiktor. However, Cezary Pazura appeared, who was honored with the same statuette. TVP presenter Ida Nowakowska was present, and the award in the Wiktor Audience category was presented personally by the then president of the national television, Jacek Kurski. Andrzej Poczobut, who has been imprisoned in Belarus since March 2021, did not receive the award for the journalist of the year.

The event may not take place this year. Media Corporation (Józef Węgrzyn, the owner of the company that originated the awards) is not planning a plebiscite this year. An official decision on this matter has not yet been made.
