The translator Gema Lopez las Heras, winner of the Jokin Zaitegi translation competition prize, will be in charge of translating into Basque the novel “La femme gelée” by the writer Annie Ernaux, the last winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The French writer, professor and teacher is one of the most renowned writers on the literary scene, and in “La femme gelée” she tells the story of a woman aware that she has given up her personal and professional development to focus on the role of wife, mother and housewife.

The translation contest for the winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature is organized by the Arrasate Euskaldun Dezagun association and the Elkar publishing house, with the collaboration of the Arrasate City Council and Caja Laboral.

“Emakume izoztua” tells the story of a woman who from the outside seems to have a good life: she maintains a good social position, is married to an executive, and is the mother of two children. However, delving deeper, she brings us closer to her frustration: she recounts how she has had to abandon her desires, her professional and personal development to focus on being a mother, wife and housewife.

Gema Lopez las Heras explained to Radio Euskadi’s “Kultura.eus” that the key to a good translation usually lies in finding the tone and style of the person writing it, and that of Annie Ernaux is “colloquial and direct, as if the writer will transfer her thoughts to paper without a filter”.

The Azkoitia translator will have finished the translation by the end of the year, and the novel “La femme gelée”, “Emakume izoztua” in Basque, will be published by Elkar.
