Ectoine is an organic compound and extremolite produced by numerous microorganisms and plants to survive extreme conditions. It is thanks to this substance that some bacteria in deserts or in craters can live in extremely high temperatures, strong sunlight and among many toxins. In 1985, scientists in Egypt noticed this and immediately began to study how ectoine can affect the human body. It turned out that it is great at relieving allergic symptoms. Later it was discovered that it has beneficial effects that can be used in the cosmetics industry.
What is ectoine and how does it affect our skin?
Ectoine belongs to the amino acids that are produced by microorganisms (extremophiles) under stress conditions such as: salinity, high or low temperature, low water content in the environment, or UV radiation. In this case, it accumulates inside the cells, even in high concentrations, and at the same time does not interfere with their work. What’s more, it protects them.
Our skin is a barrier between the body and the environment. Therefore, it is constantly exposed to the influence of external factors. This mainly applies to the stratum corneum, which plays a key role in maintaining proper hydration. Many environmental factors can have a destructive effect on this barrier and increase the loss of water from the skin, e.g. extreme temperatures, dry air, wind, solar radiation, or excessive use of detergents during daily hygiene.

Ectoine is a natural active ingredient that has many uses in cosmetics
There are many examples in the literature to prove it anti-aging and moisturizing properties. In addition, ectoine protects the skin against external factors, osmotic stress, temperature stress, drying, UV radiation and soothes inflammation.
As a component of cosmetics, it has the following effects:
- prevents premature aging of the skin,
- deeply and long-lastingly moisturizes the skin,
- protects skin cells from internal and external harmful factors,
- stabilizes and improves the skin’s protective barrier,
- soothes and calms irritated skin,
- protects the skin against DNA damage,
- stabilizes cell membranes,
- supports the skin’s immune system,
- soothes inflammation,
- participates in the regeneration of the skin and mucous membranes,
