Most of us probably have at least one pair of jeans in our wardrobe. There is no need to tell anyone about the versatility and practicality of these pants – they go with everything, do not go out of fashion and always work well on days when “there is nothing to wear”. Although we have been wearing them for years, one element remains a mystery to many. Some carry small items there, others carry items such as a lighter or a hair band. But what was a small pocket in jeans really supposed to be used for?
The secret of jeans. Most carry coins in it, but it wasn’t designed for that
The first jeans with a characteristic small pocket were designed in the 19th century in the USA by Levi Strauss – the founder of the cult company Levi Strauss & Co. At the beginning, due to their durability and functionality, they were intended primarily for miners, shepherds, cowboys and farmers as working clothes. However, much has changed over the years.
As for the small pocket next to the large front pocket, its original name was “watch pocket” and as the name suggests, it was originally used to carry a pocket watch on a chain, as the watch face fit perfectly there.
Attention is also drawn to the small metal buttons located at the pocket finish. These are rivets that appeared a little later, when it turned out that the corners in the pockets of jeans worn by workers wear out quickly. Then the creators of the iconic pants decided to sew rivets to strengthen the material. This made the pockets more durable.
