In addition to Riseborough, the big Hollywood names are nominated for the Oscars: Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh, for high-profile titles (respectively: the admirable, but also controversial “Tar”, “Blondy” about Marilyn Monroe, “Fabelmans” by Steven Spielberg and nominated for 11 statuettes “Everywhere at once”).

You don’t need money, friends are enough

As the director of a film about a woman who wins 200,000 dollars in the lottery and becomes an example that “money does not buy happiness”, debuts the producer of the acclaimed series “Better Call Saul” Michael Morris. Shot in just 19 days, this film was produced by Riseborough herself, and the film had very limited distribution. Although “To Leslie” has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. positive reviews from film critics – many rave about the actress – is 27,000. is no profit for American production. And even the best role, to get on the list of nominees, simply has to exist in the minds of the members of the Academy. Manufacturers spend thousands on this, buying advertising campaigns in industry websites and magazines, as well as on billboards along the streets where potential voters drive. “To Leslie” clearly did not have such funds, but he had something else: creators with connections.

It all started when Morris and his wife, actress Mary McCormack, showed the film to friends celebrating their wedding anniversary with them – and those friends were the Sterns. And when the legendary Howard Stern talks about something on his show, he gives it the right amount of publicity. Morris, who also worked on Apple TV+’s “For All Mankind” and Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”, and his wife later managed to persuade Andrea Riseborough to support the candidacy of, among others Charlize Theron, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Edward Norton. In social media, thanks to them, “To Leslie” melted, among others. Liam Neeson, Sally Field, Laura Dern, Geena Davies and Mira Sorvino. Positive opinions about this acting performance were expressed by, among others, Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda, Amy Adams, Kate Winslet and Helen Hunt, and Cate Blanchett even praised her when receiving her own acting award. She herself was nominated for her distinction in an interview with “Variety”:

Turns out you don’t necessarily need infinite resources. People who ask for it [rozgłos – red.] they did, it’s our community. The film community came together and made a buzz.

The Academy, however, is questioning whether Riseborough’s nomination is “in accordance with the rules”.

Oscars 2023 – for now there is a letter and checking if the rules do not violate the rules

Of course, no one officially admits that the statement issued by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has anything to do with “To Leslie”, but it reads that “the Academy’s goal is to ensure a fair and ethical competition for awards.” Therefore, the authorities decided that they must ensure that “the process is transparent and does not exclude anyone” and check whether the principles of promoting candidacies in this year’s nominations have not been violated. “In this way, we want to know whether changes to these guidelines may be needed in the era of social media and digital communication. We believe in the fairness of our nomination and voting procedures and support grassroots, sincere campaigns for outstanding performances” – assures the Academy.

What causes anxiety, and even stronger reactions in some, is m.in. the matter of an email that McCormack sent to her influential and famous friends. In addition to asking for public support for “To Leslie” and Riseborough herself, the message even contained relevant photos and hashtags for them to post on social media. McCormack wrote, among other things:

If you could post every day from now until 5pm (last day of voting for the Oscar nominations), that would be fantastic! Of course, any help will be useful, so do as much as you feel like. But how can you not feel like writing about a movie every day!

Andrea Riseborough on censored, previously disqualified for the composer

For the second year in a row, the Oscars have been linked to controversy. Last year, the Academy authorities had to deal with the irascible Will Smith, and not everyone thinks they handled it properly. Now they have another challenge ahead. One of the solutions may also be a one-year suspension of the actress from the rights of a member of the Academy – according to the regulations, such a penalty threatens those who break it for the first time. First, however, an official complaint would have to be received, and the leaks concern “concerned voices” for the time being.

For now, no one is likely to bet on Andrea Riseborough being stripped of the nomination, but there is a precedent from 2014, when an email informing jury members deciding on the Oscars for music, deprived Bruce Broughton of the nomination for the song “Alone Yet Not Alone”. “. Here, however, the sender was himself, not the wife of one of the co-creators. The question is how the Academy will view this. Nine nominations have been withdrawn so far in the history of the Oscars for various reasons. Charlie Chaplin in 1928, because, according to the jury, he had a chance to dominate the first ceremony (he had four, they left him one and an honorary Oscar).
