Spain returns to Poland two paintings looted by the Nazis that ended up in the Pontevedra Museum

During World War II Poland lost 70% of its assets. It is estimated that Some 516,000 works of art from the country disappeared. However, new technologies have helped to track these works.

Two of the pieces, the paintings of a ‘Dolorosa’ and an ‘Ecce Homo’ from the 15th century, ended up in Spain. After leaving Warsaw in 1944, they reappeared in an art store in Madrid in 1973 and lbequeathed to the Museum of Pontevedra in 1994as part of the purchase of the José Fernández López collectionmade up of 313 paintings by different authors and chronologies.

César Mosquera, vice president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, has indicated that during his life he has signed “thousands of files”, but this mission is “possibly the most satisfying”.

Elxbieta Rogowska, director of the Department of Culture of the Ministry of Poland, has assured laSexta that each return of a work “is like repairing a gap in Poland’s heritage”, and although “it is true that this gap will never fully recover, but we will try to make it smaller”.

This historic and emotional return began with a photo on Facebook. ANDhe Museum of Pontevedra promoted its collection, and the Polish Ministry of Culture identified the paintings. You can know the complete story by consulting the video that accompanies this information.
