Do you like exotic and unconventional plants? If so, turmeric, also known as turmeric, should be on your windowsill. Probably everyone knows this orange spice with a distinctive taste. Few people know, however, that turmeric is also a beautiful ornamental plant. It comes from Indochina, but it can also be grown indoors. We suggest how to grow turmeric in a pot.

Turmeric in a pot. What does it look like?

Turmeric is quite tall – it can reach up to 100 cm. Its green leaves are long and pointed. The most beautiful turmeric looks during the flowering period, i.e. in the summer. Spiky inflorescences then appear on the shoot. The turmeric flower is most often blue or purple. It usually lasts about three months.

Growing turmeric at home. Step by step

Turmeric is best grown from the root. You can buy it in grocery stores (it is similar to ginger root). Try to choose a fresh and firm root with visible bracts. The root should be divided into pieces 3 to 5 cm long. Place them in a container lined with gauze or a paper towel. Pour a small amount of water into the container every day. After a few weeks, young shoots will be visible. When green stems appear on the root, you can transplant the young turmeric seedlings into a pot with soil.

Turmeric care. Remember these rules

The turmeric flower comes from a completely different climate, so the pot should be placed in a bright and well-lit place. However, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight. The optimum air temperature is 18-23 degrees Celsius. The plant should be provided with high air humidity.

In summer, it is recommended to spray and water the plant daily. It is worth fertilizing it once a week. Turmeric prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. You can buy a ready-made mix for green plants at a garden store. When the turmeric leaves turn yellow and fall off in the fall, it’s not a cause for stress. Everything is fine with the plant, it only goes into hibernation. Cut off all dry shoots and move the plant to a cooler room. During the wintering period, turmeric should be watered less often.
