British justice studies tabloid appeal for conviction linked to Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle, a 40-year-old American actress, won her privacy violation lawsuit against the British newspaper in February.

British justice began on Tuesday the examination of the appeal presented by the Mail on Sunday tabloid, which had been sentenced for violation of the privacy of Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, by publishing a letter written by her to her father.

The editor of the Mail on Sunday, the group Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), is challenging in the Royal Courts of Justice in London the conviction for the publication of Meghan’s letter, arguing that it was “manifestly excessive and, consequently, illegal”.

At the beginning of the hearing, the editor stated that the letter in question had been written in the knowledge that it could be made public.

“We have interpreted the sentence as implicitly accepting that the letter was written in the nature of an intimate communication intended to be read only by his father,” said the attorney for the editorial group, Andrew Caldecott, who stated that this point is ” fake”.

“The letter was written specifically with the idea of a possible publication of it, since the plaintiff recognized that Mr. Markle could disseminate it in the media,” he said.

Meghan Markle, a 40-year-old American actress, won her privacy violation lawsuit against the British newspaper in February. She reproached this popular tabloid for having published a letter written in 2018, in which she asked her father, Thomas Markle, 77, to stop speaking and lying to the media about their bad or non-existent relationship between them.

Prince Henry, 37, sixth in the order of succession to the British throne, has frequently denounced the pressure exerted by the press on his partner, which became the main reason for his withdrawal from the royal family, which became effective in April 2020.

Examination of this appeal is scheduled to continue through Thursday. (I)
