Komarzyca flower – application of the plant

Komarzyca (Plectranthus coleoides) is a perennial of the Lyme family. It is suitable for growing in containers on the terrace and on the terrace, but also as a potted plant in the apartment. Plektrantus has its homeland in eastern India, and from there it spread to the area of Asia and. As a tropical plant, it is not cold-hardy and must winter in a warm room under our conditions.

The characteristic scent of mosquito is the reason why the plant is planted on balconies and terraces. Its leaves give off a very intense scent that is noticeable especially in the evenings. It strongly repels nuisance and fluff.

Komarzyca can be treated as an independent ornamental plant or combined with other popular balcony plants, both flowering and green. Its long stems encourage planting in balcony boxes and hanging pots. This is a great way to create an original balcony composition. It is a good idea to plant several different varieties of mosquito in one such pot, which differ in color of the leaves. If we want to plant a mosquito in the company of flowering plants, choose those with similar requirements: geraniums or verbena. Flowering plants should be placed in the central part of the container, and plectrantus in the side part, because it is a very expansive plant; It grows rapidly and may dominate other species.

Komarzyca flower is usually grown here as an annual plant. Initially it grows upright, later it forms long shoots which hang arched to the sides and reach a length of many meters. The attractive leaves of the mosquito are light green, green-white, green-white-yellow, two shades of green or green with purple elements, depending on the variety. For many of us, the important information is whether the mosquito is blooming. The plant develops small flowers that are rather inconspicuous. Light purple or white, they have the typical shape of the lemid (labial) family. They grow in whorls at the top of shoots in the form of clusters of 15-20 cm. Decorative leaves are definitely an attractive part of the mosquito.

Komarzyca flower: cultivation. Beginner Tips

Plektrantus is an easy-to-grow plant with low requirements. Although it is a perennial, in Polish climatic conditions it does not hibernate outside because it is completely susceptible to low temperatures. Of course, it is possible to overwinter the mosquito, but for this you have to move it indoors in the fall.

Care requirements for komarzyca:

  • Position: Komarzyca prefers semi-shaded positions on the balcony. Likes a bit diffused light. Better to give her too much shade than too much sun – continuous, intense and direct sunlight is bad for her.
  • Substrate and transplanting: The plant is not particularly capricious, on the contrary. A standard substrate for balcony flowers is enough. However, it is worth adding a layer of drainage to it – the mosquito likes permeable soil.
  • Watering and fertilizing: Komarzyca is best watered frequently, but not too abundantly. The plant feels best when the substrate is slightly moist all the time. It also tolerates short-term drying, but it is very sensitive to flooding and it rots easily. We fertilize it once every two weeks with fertilizer for green plants. When planting, you can also mix the substrate with a slow-acting granular fertilizer, so you won’t have to worry about fertilizing throughout the season.
  • Additional beauty treatments: It is worth pinching the shoots of the mosquito at the ends, because with time they become very bumpy, and large voids are formed between subsequent leaves, which does not look very aesthetically pleasing. We can use the detached fragments of shoots as cuttings. It is enough to root them in water or insert them directly into the substrate to a depth of 2-3 cm. Komarzyca is a plant that is very easy to root and does not require the use of specialized rooting preparations.
  • Diseases and pests: In conditions of proper cultivation, there should be no problems with the health of mosquitoes. It is a rather resistant plant to most plant diseases. Occasionally an aphid may appear.
