‘No way out’, the new theatrical challenge by Sebastián Cordero, opens this Thursday, January 5 at the Teatro Sánchez Aguilar

One of the most anticipated works of the last year it will finally see the spotlight this 2023. No Exitthe filmmaker’s theatrical directorial debut Sebastian Corderopremieres this Thursday, January 5 at the Sanchez Aguilar Theater. It is a co-production of the TSA with the cultural space Cino Fabiani House.

No Exit is a adaptation of Behind closed doorsan existentialist piece by the French intellectual Jean Paul Sartre which premiered in 1944 and which contains one of the maxims of contemporary dramaturgy: “The hell are the others”.

The play ‘Sin salida’ and the documentary ‘Al otro lado de la niebla’, among Sebastián Cordero’s premieres for 2022

“It’s maybe the play most important by Jean-Paul Sartreone of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century, and proposes an analysis of what existentialism proposed through a hypothetical and fanciful situation”, defends its director Cordero.

follow the story of three characters (two women and one man) that they are in hell, but the place is not what they thought, it is not the typical scheme with the devil, with pitchforks and burning pans. When the characters realize the place where they are, their expectation grows to know their eventual punishment, which is supposed to come from a maximum punishing being. But it turns out that in the dynamics of the three characters lie their own tortures.

The Sánchez Aguilar Theater celebrates its first decade with 100% capacity and two own productions for 2022

Although it has a strong philosophical content, It is a work at the same time very funnyAt least I have a lot of fun with this text. I know that Sartre conceived it as a very dark comedy, precisely because of its philosophical approach.

One of the main themes of this drama is the look of the otherthat is, the search for validation and approval of others and how their judgments affect our thoughts, emotions and even our way of seeing the world. “All the philosophical thought of Jean Paul Sartre revolves around that phrase that he dictated: ‘Man is doomed to be free’but that freedom is what makes him question himself, always, constantly”, complements Ramón Barranco, artistic director of the TSA.

No Exit is also a adolescent curiosity of its director, who read the piece for the first time at age 15. “I lived in Paris, France since I was 9 years old, I remember reading it there for the first time and being amazed by the work. I’ve never seen her staged, but as a teenager I had this fantasy of one day being able to do it. In fact, when I have worked on films that deal with claustrophobia, such as Rage either Europe ReportI always use this work as a reference, because it is like the perfect triangle where the best and worst of each person comes out”.

The decision was made possible thanks to the support of Arnaldo Gálvez, from Casa Cino Fabianiwith whom Cordero had already worked on the immersive theatrical version of Rage in Guayaquil and Quito. The idea was to premiere the work last year, even Cordero advanced the initiative in a interview in april.

“Arnaldo found out about the rights, we obtained them, we processed them to be able to stage the work… We had considered staging it in one of the post-pandemic stages, but there were still outbreaks,” recalls the filmmaker.

The proposal was submitted to Barranco del TSA, who hopes that it will become one of the milestones of a new decade of theaterwhich just celebrated its first 10 years of life in May 2022. “We start our second decade with a 20th century classic and putting it on stage for me is a fantastic gift that Arnaldo and Sebastián have given us”, says the artistic director.

The piece will be represented in the so-called third room of the Sánchez Aguilar, which is on the stage of its main room. The scenery has been adapted into a kind of quadrilateral with the public arranged on the four sides, surrounding all the action that will take place in 90 minutes. The actors cannot escape either, being a great challenge for them to stay on stage without pauses and not to break the tension either.

The cast is made up of Alejandro Fajardo, Erika Velez and Liz Rezabalalike the fallen from grace. There’s a fourth character, who is a kind of guide or bellboy to this hell, although in the original work he is a waiter. This infernal assistant will be played by the renowned actor lucho mueckaywho with his attitude he will give you a lot of flavor to this version of Sartre’s hell.

in the plot Erika is Inéswho at first glance looks like the villainalthough for her he is the most human character. “I love her, I think she is the character who is clearer on the subject of evil, the way she exists is through the suffering of others… It can be the villainalthough at the same time it seems to me that He is a character that has very human parts, very sensitiveit has a shell that sometimes breaks and that fascinates me ”, defends the actress.

With this he anticipates that the characters They try to be as realistic as possible.. “It happens to all of us at some point. We are all villains, we are all executioners of someone… there is an essence of yours, but there is something that comes out that another person brings out… Each one is good and each one is bad at certain times ”.

At the gates of its premiere, Cordero has high expectations of the reception of this title. In fact, for the night of the first performance, the tickets have been sold out. “It is a text that works today, hell is timeless and they are characters that are seen now.”

One way to adapt the main theme of the work to the present is a nod to social networks that Cordero personally sees as a version of hell, especially because of the hyperconnection they represent. “The networks are the perfect and magnified example of hell, where everything you do is there for the judgment of the rest and people give their opinions and people love to have their little moment to say ‘well, what I say is also important’ and he becomes judged by more people”.

On stage, the characters have a cell phone where on the screen they can see what is happening on earth without them. Are they criticized, are they forgotten? that’s hell too.
