Michel J. Fox admitted that the diagnosis made him drink. “I was definitely an alcoholic”

In 1991, Michael J. Fox found out that he had Parkinson’s, he publicly told about it only in 1998. Now 61, the actor hid his health problems from the public for the next seven years as he privately struggled with denial and depression. While working on more projects at the time, he was taking dopamine pills “like candy” to help stave off the early symptoms of the disease. On set, he also tried to always hold props to hide the tremors. However, when he realized that it was an incurable disease, he fell into alcoholism.

Michel J. Fox: I was definitely an alcoholic. But I haven’t had a drink in 30 years

In the Davis Guggenheim film, the star of “Back to the Future” includes:

I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know what was coming. What if I could have four glasses of wine and maybe a glass more? I was definitely an alcoholic. But I haven’t had a drink in 30 years.

The actor highlights the role of his wife Tracy Pollan and their four children in helping him stay sober. Fox admits, however, that the first years were not easy. – As low as alcohol has brought me, abstinence has brought me even lower. I couldn’t run away from myself any longer. So he tried to work and travel as much as possible in the early years of his diagnosis: “You can’t pretend at home you don’t have Parkinson’s because you’re just living with it,” he explains. In the document, he says that his life is permanently connected with pain, as well as numerous injuries related to, for example, falls. Michael J. Fox, who established a foundation that funds Parkinson’s research, says:

People keep saying, ‘Be careful’. And that has nothing to do with it. It just happens.

The documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” will be available to watch on Apple TV+ later this year.
