The beginnings of the investigation and the collection of evidence. They pointed to one culprit
On the first night of the camp, two babysitters had to silence the laughing several times. That evening, however, they heard a low, guttural sound like a moan or growl. They immediately thought that it was a wild animal, but they did not suspect that a tragedy was taking place in one of the tents. When Carla, the babysitter, came out of the tent in the morning, she noticed three sleeping bags scattered with the bodies of murdered girls underneath. The camp was canceled and the police launched an investigation.
The tent in which the girls slept was damaged and numerous traces of blood were found on the mattresses. A lot of evidence has also been discovered. Among other things, shoe prints and a rope, and a flashlight with a newspaper stuffed inside. Not far from the crime scene, in a nearby cave, scraps of the same newspaper that was in the flashlight were also found, along with pictures of three women and the inscription “He was here. Goodbye fools” on the wall.
Based on the found photographs, it was established that they were developed by Gene Leroy Hart, who was incarcerated in a correctional facility in Oklahoma for years. The man, however, escaped from prison in 1973. Ten months after the Girl Scouts were murdered, he was caught.
Who killed the girls? Suspects have been eliminated over the years
During the trial, it turned out that Hart’s foot did not match the size of the marks left at the crime scene. Many people did not believe in his guilt, and in the end even the jury found him not guilty. Nevertheless, Hart returned to prison to serve a 300-year sentence for previous crimes. He died two months later of a heart attack.
For years, the police eliminated and interrogated various suspects, but at various stages of the investigation, all were excluded. In the end, DNA testing determined that it was Gene Leroy Hart who committed the three brutal murders. These results made it clear that he was the culprit, and the right person was suspected from the start.
