The ‘Arny Case’ broke out in 1996. It all started in a pub in Seville that would give its name to the case and in which Police dismantled a prostitution ring of minors that operated in various locations in the city. The case became a real scandal when, after the summary secrecy was lifted, it was confirmed that the investigating judge He had taken statements from several celebritiessuch as Jesús Vázquez, Jorge Cadaval or Javier Gurruchaga and even the Juvenile Judge Manuel Rico Lara.
During 26 months, the time it took for the sentence to be announced, many of these personalities were pointed out in a public and media trial.
The case was built based on the accusations of several minors between the ages of 14 and 17 who were prostitutes in the city. At oral hearing, 13 of the 59 witnesses retracted exonerating several of the famous defendants; some alleged pressure from the police and the Prosecutor’s Office and others went so far as to affirm that they randomly chose those involved.
Total, 32 of the 49 defendants were acquitted given the lack of credibility and the contradictions of the minors who denounced the case. The most media personalities were released from charges, but the sentence accused another 16 people, convicting the two main owners of the bar, eight employees and six clients, for prostitution of minors.
On January 20, HBO Max will premiere ‘Arny. Story of an infamy’a documentary series that will feature the testimonies of some of those involved in the media trial. The docuseries investigates the irreparable moral damage suffered by the suspects, who saw their file stained under the accusation of a large part of society, and will analyze possible hidden interests.
“There was a desire to criminalize everything that sounded like homosexual”, is exposed in the trailer, in which the presenter Jesús Vázquez admits that the case turned his life into a nightmare.
Now, what has been considered by many as a trial against homosexuality and whose ultimate purpose was to generate a scandal greater than the political commotion in the region at the time, arrives on the platform on January 20 to seek an answer to the big question: Who pays for the damage caused to the lives of these ‘false culprits’?
