‘La piel octopo’, by Ana Cristina Barragán, arrives in movie theaters in Ecuador this Thursday

A sensory experience is what the writer-director promises Ana Cristina Barragan in his new movie Octopus skin. After its world premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2022, this Thursday, January 19, the creator of Sunrise arrives at Ecuadorian movie theaters with his second feature film.

Ana Cristina Barragán celebrates that her film ‘La piel octopus’ participates in the WIP Latam of Zinemaldia

The 90 minute film portrays Iris and Ariel, 17-year-old twins, who live with their mother and their older sister Lia in an old house in the middle of a rocky island, covered with shellfish and birds. Adolescents have grown up isolated from the continent, in a sibling relationship that exceeds the limits of the common bond and with an intimate and daily connection with nature.

The abrupt absence of the mother deeply hurts the three siblings, and Iris, moved by the need to separate from Ariel, decides to travel to the city. The noisy streets, the shopping centers, the rejection of her father, and the mourning, mark the path of Iris in the understanding of her own being and her love for her essence and identity.

“There is something about the twin relationship, the cryptophasia – the unique language of the brothers – and the rupture that implies growing up and separating, that makes me tremble. I want to talk about that mixture of beauty and darkness within a family. In this film, the rupture of the twin universe is linked to the rupture of the human being with nature”he writes in his film project.

In an interview to be released on Sunday in Magazine, Barragán comments that his film is a completely different visual and sound experience, where the stories of his characters merge with microscopic marine beings. “Beyond the story of a film, I look for an aroma, a particular flavor that transcends the image and that stays with the audience. His sexuality and his language, without parameters, in a tense and beautiful universe. I seek to photograph this universe with its singularity, with intimacy”, notes in her note as director.

Magazine Cinephile Society describes her as “an astonishingly thought-provoking journey into the heart of the human condition.”

Its cast is led by Isadora Chávez Ron, Juan Francisco Vinueza and Hazel Powell, young actors who make their film debut with her. She is also part of the cast Cristina Marchán, theater and film actress with more than 15 years of experience, member of the Malayerba group and actress in works such as Me.de.as (2022, Gabriela Ponce) and Lo invisible (2022, Javier Andrade ).

octopus skin It was financed mainly with international funds, and in Ecuador with the support of the extinct Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Creation, Wide Shot Films and other private companies. was selected in the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece, and won Best Film at the Canary Islands International Author Film Festival in Spain.
