Sales of gasoline and diesel cars fall in Europe

Sales of new vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines fell in the second quarter in Europe, while hybrids and electrics continued their conquest of the marketaccording to data released Wednesday by manufacturers.

In a market crippled by a shortage of electronic components, sales of gasoline-powered vehicles fell 22.2% year-on-year to 909,000 cars, accounting for 38.5% of the market for the European Union (EU) in the second quarter.

Diesel models fell 27.7%, with 409,000 vehicles sold, and represented only 17.3% of sales, against 20.2% in the same period of 2021.

Hybrid cars, fueled by bonuses and promoted by manufacturers but held back by scarcity and the economic contextsaw their sales drop slightly in the EU (-2.2%).

Even so, the market share of hybrids continued to rise, and currently represent 22.6% of sales.

The rechargeable hybrids, meanwhile, maintain a downward trend since the end of 2021 (-12.5%), with a marked decrease in France and Germany, while its real CO2 emissions are highly questioned. They currently represent 8.7% of sales, with 206,000 cars sold.

The category of 100% electric cars is the only one that advanced (11%), with 243,000 units sold, although its conquest of the market has been delayed due to supply problems. They represented 9.9% of sales in the second quarter.

This limited performance can be explained by the supply difficulties of one of its leaders in the European market, Volkswagenlinked to the production of certain components in Ukraine due to the war.

Sales of electric cars of the German group fell 16.5% in the second semester in Europe, after they advanced 33.6% in the first quarter. (YO)
