Marina Salvarezza in a new cycle of Cervantes Wednesday: “People are afraid of classical theater, when in reality it is fun and easy to understand”

The theater initiative called Wednesday of Cervantes returns for a third edition this September 2022 at the Sanchez Aguilar Theater. The proposal puts on stage selected texts by the world-renowned Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. On this occasion, the production will also integrate fragments of the works of another important Spaniard for universal literature, such as the playwright Lope de Ruedaaim Marina Salvarezzadirector of the staging.

Specifically, three works will be performed from Wednesday, September 7 (and the following Wednesdays of the month): The olives Y cuckold and happy, by Rueda, considered the forerunner of the ‘golden century of Spanish theatre’; the third work is The altarpiece of wondersby Cervantes.

The first two, explains Salvarezza, make up the first part of the staging, which has been divided into two. Among them will be held a musical intermission of about 20 minutes. “We have always done it that way since the beginning, four years ago, to give the public a breather, to be able to talk, socialize.”

Wednesdays at the Sánchez Aguilar Theater are dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes

After the intermission, the piece by Cervantes follows. “Talk about the dishonestyof the corruptionof the hypocrisy of the society that Miguel de Cervantes manages in his texts. In this altarpiece two authors are presented, in quotes, because they are two frauds who make believe that in the altarpiece, or in that theater, there is a marvel, but that no one can see her if she does not have high lineage Or is he from a noble family?

Miguel de Cervantes, an author who does not lose validity

Talking about Cervantes does not go out of stylein the 21st century, in 2022 and most likely it will not lose validity in the years to come. Salvarezza agrees.

“The theater in the 16th century it was one of the most interesting for the townbecause it was just a way to criticize the lord so muchthe duke, the count, often at the risk of his life, because the criticism was very forceful and the author ran a serious risk of being jailed, as a kind of journalistic censorship”, illustrates the Italian actress.

The reflections of Cervantes, one of the geniuses of universal theaterThey are still as relevant today. In the case of The altarpiece of wonders, his message, “fits perfectly for our society at this timebecause one believes that because they have money, power or belong to a large family, they do not want to appear stupid and accept these wonders that cannot be seen, that do not exist. This work is addressed to any of us when he decides not to be authenticbut decides to pretend ”, explains the actress.

Marina Salvarezza also acknowledges that For some, classical theater can generate some kind of suspicion. and I still reject. It’s because you don’t know him. “Cervantes wrote for the people, his honor was precisely to be understood by the whole world and his works are like that. We are the ones who over time have imposed ourselves as an obstacle. What one is afraid of is that classical theater is something frightening, when it is the most fun and the most understandable.”.

Work of Cervantes, to the theater stage

In fact, the interpreter points out, the first time that the Cervantes hors d’oeuvres were held, the reception was such that the public thought it was a fixed schedule. “We had an incredible success, so much so that it is already the third year that it has been done. And always with very good comments, people are surprised and also very pleased, because she realizes that she can understand Cervantes and classical theater, and they stop this prejudice, which is very common. That is why I say that the person has to go to the theater with an open mind to enjoy it”.

The Cervantes hors d’oeuvres will take place every Wednesday in September at the Sánchez Aguilar Theater, in the space called Al fresco (the theater garden), at 8:00 p.m. It lasts 60 minutes in total and features performances by Raúl Sánchez McMillan, Michelle Zamudio, Melissa López, Carlos Aragundi, Benjamín Cortés, Nicole Cerna, Karen Peláez and José Miguel Flores.
