The new album was released in August 2022, and was promoted by singles such as “Skin of My Teeth”, “Substance” or “29”. The whole material is maintained in a pop-punk and rock climate. On the cover of the album, we see the singer lying on a bright mattress in the shape of a cross, which is located on a bright red background. The woman is dressed in a skimpy outfit and is bound with black belts.
Demi Lovato cover could cause ‘serious offense to Christians’
Some time has passed since the release of the album, so the BBC reminds that posters appeared then, among others on the streets of London. However, the inhabitants of the city could admire them only for four days. After that time, they disappeared from the urban space, which was the result of complaints received by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), i.e. an organization regulating the British advertising market. An investigation into the matter was then launched.
On Wednesday, January 11, the ASA announced that it had decided to ban the use of the poster. The justification reads that “it is likely to cause serious offense to Christians.” It was also pointed out how Demi Lovato lies in the graphic – her legs are turned to the side, which, according to the organization, may evoke associations with Christ on the cross. Attention was also drawn to the title of the album, which contains profanity. It is pointed out that despite the fact that one of the letters was deliberately changed, it can still be perceived as “combining sexuality with the sacred symbol of the crucifix and crucifixion”.
The artist’s label Polydor Records has so far not referred to the decision of the British advertising market regulator. In August, however, when posters were ordered to be cleared from the streets of London, the publisher pointed out that the depicted scene was not intended to target any feelings.
