These are the Chinese vehicle brands that are gaining ground in Ecuador and that only in the first quarter of 2022 have reached a 35.7% share of sales by country of origin, outperforming the rest and also up 7.6% compared to the first quarter of 2021 when they reached 28.1% of the total sales share pie.
The technology, the quality, the services they provide, the affordable prices and the designs are part of the reasons why the cars of Chinese origin have been welcomed, say representatives of the Ecuadorian China Chamber of Commerce, dealers and distributors of these vehicles.
“Here in the country, last year there were three Chinese vehicle brands that were in the top 10 of the best sellers. And we have cases of two brands of Chinese trucks that, if we add their sales, exceed the number one (in that segment), which is a local brand in sales. It is a phenomenon that is repeated in other countries and that here, in Ecuador, is taking place in a very positive way”, says Gustavo Cáceres Pazmiño, president of the Ecuadorian-China Chamber of Commerce.
In Ecuador, to date, there are 61 Chinese brands of cars that include light vehicles (cars, trucks, and SUVs), commercial vehicles (van, bus, and truck), heavy vehicles, and electric cars, according to official figures.
How to save on gasoline consumption?
The growth in sales, described as positive by the unions, has occurred especially in the last four years. Cáceres gives examples: in 2016 the units sold that were registered were a little more than 3,000, while in 2021 sales exceeded 22,000 units of Chinese cars.

In the first quarter of 2022 alone, a little more than 11,400 Chinese cars were sold in Ecuador compared to 7,300 in the first quarter of 2021, according to statistics from the Ecuadorian China Chamber of Commerce.
If the trend continues, Chinese brands could reach 40% of the share of car sales in the country. In other words, out of every 10 cars sold, four will be Chinese brands, says Cáceres.

In 2022, we are with a market share accumulated growth of 5.5%, maintaining sustained growth”, says Christian Cazar, manager of the Chery Brand of the Maresa corporation, which has more than 32 dealerships nationwide.
In the case of commercial cars (van, bus and truck) there are eleven brands of Chinese origin that are in the top 20 of the best sellers by signature in this category. These are: JAC, which ranks second; Shineray, the fourth; Sinotruk, the fifth; JMC, the sixth; Foton, the seventh; DFSK, the eighth; Karry, the ninth; Dongfeng, the eleventh; Faw Trucks, the thirteenth; Golden Dragon, the nineteenth and BYD, the twentieth.

“Little by little, the Chinese product has been gaining its place in the Ecuadorian market, to such an extent that it has a share of at least 35% of the total vehicle fleet that is sold and it is because it has been gradually growing and improving in technology, equipment, feasibility and brand support, in addition to competitive prices”, explains Gino Barrezueta Morales, president of the company China Motors (Mecanosolvers).
The company he represents began importing Chinese cars in 2007, instead of the Russian Lada, and now also offers electric Chinese cars that are gaining ground every day. Of the latter, he adds, he sells an average of seven units per month.
China Motor Expo Ecuador 2022

The second edition of the China Motor Expo will take place from June 22 to 26. It will be in the Palacio de Cristal, on the south side of the Malecón Simón Bolívar, in the Plaza de la Integración.

In 2021, China managed to produce more than 25 million vehicles (at a participation level it represents 31%) and, according to Chinese government data, it is hoped that by 2025 it can reach the number of 35 million”, he comments.
