French painter Pierre Soulages, the ‘master of black’, dies

This Wednesday the French artist passed away at the age of 102 Pierre Soulagesknown as “the painter of black” for his abstract works in this color.

The announcement was confirmed by christian teyssedremayor of Rodez, the French town where the painter was born, who expressed his “immense sadness”.

Born in 1919 in that town in the south, Soulages was one of the most important and valued figures in French contemporary art.

The color black and the reflections of light on this tone characterized his work, which the artist himself called outrenoirsince he considered that in the dark there was also a kind of luminosity.

His paintings contained gigantic black spots that some defined as indecipherable mysteries.

Critics related it to movements such as the tachism, informalism, abstract expressionism or lyrical abstractionbut he claimed not to feel integrated into any of those labels.

His works have been exhibited all over the world and, in 2014, his hometown opened a museum named after him.

On the occasion of its centenary, in 2019, the The Louvre dedicated a retrospective to him and Soulages became the third living artist in history to have such a tribute at the Parisian museum. (after Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso).

According to the specialized art press, in 2013 Soulages became one of the most valued contemporary artists in the world. His works have risen in price by nearly 500% in recent decades.
