The album “Floating On A Dream” will be released on May 20, 2022. The work was produced by Grammy winner Shooter Jennings, (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker, American Aquarium), and mixed by Trina Shoemaker (Brandi Carlile, Queens Of The Stone Age, Sheryl Crow). Kaplan’s western fascinations and his reflections on his Californian roots intertwine on the album. In 11 tracks you can hear country, blues, soul, tribal percussion and a bit of gospel music, interspersed with acoustic rock. The lyrics are devoted to topics such as morality or the search for meaning in life. The whole thing is held together by Kaplan’s amazing voice, whose range extends from falsetto to deep bass tones.
Winding roads and letters to family members. Avi Kaplan made you melt with their first album
Although some of the tracks were written just after Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, most of the material was composed especially for this album. The main single from the release is “First Place I Go”, published last year. – Although there are dark elements and some struggles in this song, I wanted it to have strength. I wanted fire, the artist explains. – I wanted people to have a sense that something was coming, that it would not be just my soft, warm voice and sweet, songwriting numbers. I wanted them to know there was more to come.
“Floating On A Dream” is the next stage of Kaplan’s musical evolution, which began in 2020 with the EP “I’ll Get By” and continued with the single “Song for the Thankful”. On the new album, Kaplan’s singing evokes associations with country star Lee Hazelwood or folk legend Richie Havens. The album also clearly shows the influence of Jennings, who was responsible for a truly cinematic production, multi-layered harmonies and a spatial western atmosphere. “Avi is an amazing singer/songwriter, and this album is a cross between the work of Ennio Morricone and Bill Withers,” says Shooter Jennings.
Many of the songs on “Floating On A Dream” touch on the sadness and loneliness associated with Kaplan’s separation from his loved ones, and resulting from intensive touring. “I spent a lot of time on the road, away from my family, and I realized that I miss them a lot,” he says. – There’s a song called “On My Way” which is a letter to every member of my family. I have a brother, a sister, a mom, a dad, and every verse goes to one of them. The songs closest to your heart don’t always go viral, but when they do, it’s the greatest thing in the world.
My road had many twists and turns. It was a struggle at times, but finishing this album is a huge step for me to become the artist I hope to become. – I’ve been waiting a long time to give my music to the world and introduce myself through this music. It’s time to make this dream I’m drifting on a reality.
As part of the “Floating On A Dream” promotion, Avi Kaplan will perform on April 3 in Warsaw’s Proxima, and a day later, on April 4 in the Kwadrat club in Krakow.
