Pop Up Cinema, the platform that bets on Ecuadorian audiovisual talent

The industry of streaming It was already a multi-billion dollar business before the pandemic, but the lockdown has accelerated the transition from analogue to digital media. Pop Up Cinema, application of streaming digital audiovisual content, is the first platform for streaming Ecuadorian company that produces its own content, unlike other national platforms, such as Choloflix. The application represents the intent of the chain of coffee-micro-theaters Pop Up to venture into the digital niche, dominated worldwide by companies such as Netflix, Amazon and HBO. It is also born from an “investment” in the development of the national audiovisual product, according to Paúl García, head of Innovation and Development.

“There is a market that is growing, I would dare to say, 2,000%, which is precisely entertainment via streaming. The companies have to find a segment through which they can be part of this cake”, points out García. The industry of streaming In the United States, for example, it surpassed television entertainment offers for the first time in August 2022, according to the data measurement company Nielsen.. The streaming captured 34.8% of the audience, compared to 34.4% captured by cable television.

García also highlights that Pop Up Cinema is an interesting proposal because it deals with content that would not have left the country before but that now, thanks to the platform, can be seen by subscribers anywhere in the world. Making the platform available worldwide required a study and legal adaptation work to respect the laws of copyright Of each country.

Microtheater in Bastión Popular: Pop Up opens free space in Zumar on February 18

However, these are not direct recordings of the productions presented live in the micro-theater, clarifies Ricardo Velasteguí, artistic director of the platform: “In essence, we start from a theatrical script and transform it into a film script, which are totally different”.

Thus, the application, which has approximately one thousand recurring monthly subscribers, seeks to appeal to all types of consumers with a variety of themes and genres in the content it produces through local actors, musicians, and screenwriters. “We want to have a wide range,” says Velasteguí about the content available on the platform, which began by offering short films and has expanded to include miniseries and documentaries.

Pop Up Cinema is managed by a subscription system with monthly payments, such as Netflix and Disney Plus. The payment system, says Velasteguí, is essential to attract consumers to the platform, because, unlike other applications that use a payment system on request —that is, the user pays for each content they want to consume—, Pop Up Cinema users only pay $4.99 per month and have access to all the content offered. “It’s like a hotel: I want to pay for everything included and that’s it,” says Velasteguí. They also plan to explore other cultural themes, such as stand up and concerts.
