“We are going to put a career search engine,” says Senescyt secretary on access to higher education 2023

For fifteen days, high school graduates will be able to register on a government platform with a view to participating in the process of access to higher education for the coming year.

The Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) will no longer be in charge of the process, but each university and polytechnic school.

Andrea Montalvo, head of the Senescyt, in an interview with this newspaper, refers to what is sought with that registry, how long it will last and what the next steps will be.

Does this week, December 29, 2022 and until January 12, 2023, begin the Single Registry with a view to applying for the year 2023?

The process of access to higher education already passes to the universities as a promise already fulfilled by our president.

The process starts precisely with the National Registry, which seeks to ensure that young people can have a single registry and that universities can also receive unified and official information on each of their applicants.

It is a simple process, in which the young people will fill in certain data and for our part we will consume the information from the different State portfolios, such as the case of vulnerability, the Social Registry or also the high school grades from the school so that once Once this profile is ready, they can go to the different universities and carry out their admission process according to the mechanisms they establish.

Do high school graduates have to register?

The first step is for young people to register on this national platform that is registrounicoedusup.gob.ec, and there they must fill out the forms that are requested, it is a mandatory process, and once done they are ready to access any of the universities or institutes of your choice for admission processes.

What is the information to fill out?

They are general data of the applicant’s profile, such as information on their ethnic self-identification, in which school they studied, it will be confirmed to make an initial sweep, what is the career of their interest and to be able to give that information to the universities, that is, nothing more register your data so that the universities can have knowledge of the universe of people who are interested in accessing and that we have a unique profile of each one of them.

And why does it have to be mandatory?

In order for the system to work as we expect it to and for there to be established mechanisms -in this case- for monitoring and follow-up, that there is an initial profile of this young person, so that it does not happen in the non-consensual case that a young person in a university They may say that they are in a situation of poverty, but in another they say no and in another university another self-identification profile is established and the most important thing is that we as a Government can provide the universities with the information they need in order for them to They can mainly be in charge of the admission process as such and not of this information gathering that could slow down the process.

Will these data then be verified?

The data that young people enter by having, among State portfolios, our internal processes to confirm, will effectively be reconfirmed and we will provide the information.

Will they also have to upload documents, such as the certificate of having finished high school?

No, no certificates. All they have to do is enter the platform, fill out the form and we already have that profile, because and with the agreements that are celebrated between the State portfolios, we consume information according to the applicant’s ID number.

What entities will handle this information?

Universities and polytechnic schools and institutes will be the ones that can review the information with the prior consent of each of the young people.

If a young person goes, what do I know, to the University of Guayaquil, with their consent they enter the platform, they verify that they have registered on the national platform and with that information the admission process begins.

It begins with the evaluation mechanism that is identified, that has been established in each university and later the university will evaluate those admission processes and determine who has been accepted.

What happens if the bachelor is still a minor?

The process to establish admission will start exactly once we have the information on the high school and grade marks.

Could you estimate how many people could register in the Single Registry?

According to the experience of previous years, there are approximately 280,000 people who apply for higher education.

This process lasts fifteen days and then what comes next?

That young people approach the universities of their choice and apply. The universities will inform what the admission processes are and in any case, within this platform of the National Registry we have the links and redirection of the admission processes of each of the universities available to the public.

Once they carry out their admission process, the universities evaluate each of the applicants and, on this same platform, they notify us which of them have been accepted to each of the careers and finally the process concludes with the young person deciding whether to apply. to more than one university and accept that admission process and with that you are ready to enroll.

We can do adequate monitoring, but also work in coordination with the universities so that the process flows efficiently, dynamically, but always considering affirmative action policies, current regulations, and equal opportunities.

Do students have any registration limits?

By the same principle of the Constitution, they can access any university or institute of their choice.

Also on this portal we are going to make a career search engine available to the public, in which universities, also, from the month of January, we are going to put a vocational orientation test so that they can review what they really want to study and that they carry out their admission processes in the best way.

Can you access one, 10, 20 universities, there is no limit?

They can access the number that they determine and the platform once the universities notify who they have admitted and the young person accepts a place at the university of their choice, what is achieved is, if they applied to more than one university, those places will be release for other people.

Are universities ready for their admission processes?

Since day number one we have worked hand in hand with the universities. The regulation establishes that for two academic periods, universities may request support from Senescyt for their processes.

After having studied each one of the cases, we have visited the territory and we have identified that only 9 of the 31 universities will require the support of Senescyt, and it will be given directly at the university.

They have already established what their admission processes are, they are already aware of the regulations.

What we have ratified is the commitment that Senescyt assigns three technicians in each of the universities to carry out accompaniment and all this so that the system works in the best way.

In general, what are the admission processes that universities will apply?

As established by the Organic Law of Higher Education there will always have to be an evaluation mechanism, this can be: a test, a test, a specific psychometric battery for a career, for example, specific admission processes could be established for the career of Medicine, but they could also complement it if necessary with an interview.
