2022 has been an “exceptional” year for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, according to its management team. They believe that the data denote the “good health of the museum and the attractiveness that continues to awaken” after 25 years of experience.
The disappearance of the restrictive measures arising from the pandemic has been noted, and this summer has been the best in the history of the museum in terms of the volume of visits.
The annual number of visitors, 1,289,147, makes 2022 the third best year in its history, behind 2017 and 1998.
Regarding the origin of the visits, it is noteworthy that the number of visitors from Araba, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa (27% of the total) has tripled compared to usual; residents of the Basque Autonomous Community were able to visit the museum for free between October 25 and December 2, an opportunity that 100,000 people took advantage of.
Many visitors, for their part, came from France (14%), Germany (5%), Great Britain (5%), the United States (4%) and Italy (3%).
According to data published by the museum in a press release, “the total demand generated as a result of the Museum’s activity in the Basque Country has been 472.5 million euros, the contribution to GDP has been 413.9 million euros and these figures have generated additional income for the Basque Public Treasuries of 64.1 million euros.
