was one of the artists who performed during the “Wielki caroling of 2022”. The concert was organized in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, and apart from Kamiński, they sang e.g. Cleo, Roxie Węgiel and Grzegorz Hyży. But it was the performance of the traditional pastoral “Oj maluśki, maluśki” in the version of the author of the hit “Kosmiczne energie” that moved the listeners the most and caused some controversy. Under the clip from the performance, both on Facebook and Instagram, a heated discussion flared up. You can see three camps in it: delighted lovers of the singer, disgusted critics-haters and mediators who point out that hate is inappropriate, because technically there is nothing to fault – even if you don’t like the artist.
Kamiński sang a carol, and people argue about it
At a Christmas carol concert on Polsat TV, Kamiski sang a highlander pastoral song “Oj maluśki, maluśki”.
There are over 1,000 comments under the video on Facebook alone. Enthusiastic and positive opinions predominate in them: “Every sound is wonderfully refined … thank you”, “So much expression here”, “Beautiful, our heart softens Ralph, God is born, and you announce it to us! May he bless you!”, ” It was beautiful when Rafał does something, it’s the best he can”, “Firecracker!”, “Beautiful, traditional interpretation without any fancy arrangements. Beautiful voice and these emotions. Super.”, “Beautiful performance. 100 times better than these ‘ howlers’ Górniak or Steczkowska”; “Ralph, as usual, professionally”, “Amazing performance, I absorb it, but it keeps notes”, “Great! A real artist and a piece of voice! They should show this assist more often! It’s beyond time! Super!”, “Duck is good. Cleanly”, ” I said a long time ago that this is a piece of sensitive, good artist”, “You can understand everything. He doesn’t swallow the ends. Bravo”.
As it happens on the web, there were also dissatisfied listeners.
Some of them believe that the interpretation of the song was inappropriate and point out the musician’s technical deficiencies: “When you want to listen to Christmas carols and the TV starts buzzing”, “He sings terribly. I don’t like him”, “Weak voice and ugly timbre, he struggled with this performance”, “This world is going to the dogs”, “It’s hard to mess up a Christmas carol, the sleeper did it”, “Howler”, “How he meows”, “Poor embarrassment”, “He should get off the stage immediately”.
Others simply express strong disapproval: “But it’s artificial”, “This is horror”, “Profanation of this beautiful carol”, “Massacre him and his performance”, “Who is this anyway? It’s impossible to listen to it. Such a beautiful song spoil”. Some people have a problem with the latest trends in Polish popular music: “I think people are crazy about how wonderful they think it is! My scissors open when I listen to it! And I rather turn it off right away, our music has been useless for the last few years.”
There are also a lot of comments regarding the image of the artist and his appearance. Since they are often intolerant and homophobic, let’s just say that remarks such as “Where did he come from. Who invented him this freak. He’s tragic” or “What’s that haircut, singing ok, but that hair? Like in the Middle Ages” are among the most sensitive .
This is also noticed by a lot of people who carefully read negative opinions: “He sings very nicely. Reading the comments, you can see how the writers spit venom – such church ladies pray under the statue, and the devil is behind their skin”, “I read these mean, hateful comments of Catholics sitting at Christmas Eve tables, breaking a wafer a few hours earlier. Polish hypocrisy in a nutshell”.
A remark that appeals to reason in particular stands out:
What’s going on with you guys? Judge the singing and performance of the carol, not the appearance and image of the artist. Leave your prejudices alone. Have some culture and empathy. Amazing performance, a truly extraordinary talent. Greetings, Mr. Rafał, and I wish you many successes in your artistic work.
You can also find opinions of people who express their astonishment that such a discussion broke out around this performance: “I don’t understand this whole storm … a beautiful interpretation of a carol”, “After all, it’s a normally sung carol, that’s how it’s always sung”, “Oh what’s the deal with this case? What’s the deal?”, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, but the execution was fine. He didn’t distort the melody like other people did.”
There are also a lot of people who point out that regardless of whether you like Kamiński or not, his performance cannot be faulted: “This man is not my story, but really, in my opinion, he can’t be faulted, well, I think that it was a spectacular and decent performance”, “He sang loudly and from the heart (you don’t have to look, just listen!). Bigger stars than him had much worse interpretations and mutilated beautiful carols”, “Come on, people. I’ve heard a lot of nightmares interpretations of Christmas carols, but this one is definitely not one of them. I’m not a fan of Kamiński, so I must judge objectively?”, “Even though I don’t like him, I must admit that he has a good voice”, “I don’t like him, but he sang a carol beautifully”, “I personally don’t listen to music performed by Mr. Kaminski, but the pastoral sung beautifully”, “To all Ralph haters: you are hopeless”.
There are also reflections that some find it difficult to get used to the novelty: “When Czesław Niemen sang ‘Dziwny jest ten świat’, they wanted to lynch him. The new breaks through with difficulty”.
Ralph Kamiński is an example of a vocalist who combines chamber music with alternative pop and successfully breaks through with his repertoire to the mainstream media. He is not only a singer, but also a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. He won a number of industry awards, e.g. at the Actor’s Song Review, he was nominated many times for the Fryderyk awards or the “Polityka” Passport, took part in the Małe Granie tour, played on the stage of the Pol’and’Rock Festival and, like rapper Mata, appeared in his own McDonald’s advertisement . He already has four albums in his discography and is undoubtedly one of the most interesting artists on the Polish music scene.
He was born in Jasło, where he also grew up and took his first steps in music. It should be emphasized that he has a solid musical background: he studied violin at a music school, he also graduated from vocal studies at the Faculty of Jazz and Stage Music at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. Stanisław Moniuszko in Gdańsk, and also studied at the Pop Department at Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. He also has an interesting image, strongly referring to the fashion of the 60s and 70s. He is also a frequent guest of television programs and already has a group of devoted listeners. An additional flavor is that he is related to another popular Polish singer, . Their grandmother and grandfather were siblings, which the singer confirmed in an interview with Alicja Reisch.
