“Watchmen”: HBO series worth knowing not only because of its star cast

“Watchmen”: HBO series. What is the plot focused on?

“Watchmen” is one of those series that, despite the passage of time, does not lose its splendor and true sci-fi fans should know it. The end of the year is a good time to catch up on movies and series. So if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth taking a look at the HBO series library and catching up on this extremely addictive production.

“Watchmen” is about masked superheroes and villains living in an alternate reality and outlaws. Interestingly, the series is a continuation of the 2009 film of the same title. The world in the series “Watchmen” is significantly different from ours. America (who won the Vietnam War thanks to superheroes and was not shaken by the Watergate scandal) has been ruled continuously for 26 years by former actor Robert Redfort. In this world, the Internet does not exist, and phones look more like those from the 1980s than modern smartphones. Former superheroes who don’t cooperate with the police have been outlawed.

The plot focuses on a new threat to citizens, which is now an organization called the Seventh Cavalry wearing the masks of the superhero Rorschach and preaching the superiority of the white race. Words come to action, and during Christmas 2016 in the city of Tulusa, Oklahoma, which is also the main place of events, the Seventh Cavalry launches an attack on local police officers. Since that event, known as the White Night, police officers start wearing yellow masks out of fear for their safety. Following the brutal murder of local police chief Judd Crawford, detective Angela Abar, the masked Nightsister, tries to find out who the killer is. She is helped by FBI agent Laurie Blake (ex-Silk Specter superhero) who specializes in catching masked illegal “defenders of order”. We also learn about the fate of Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons) and what happened to Dr. Manhattan. In the series, attention is drawn to Tulus, as well as the brutality of the masked police.

“Watchmen” movie and series: what’s the difference?

The 2009 film “Watchmen” (“Watchmen”) directed by Zack Snyder was based on the extremely popular comic book of the same name by Alan Moore (drawings by Dave Gibbons and John Higgins). The action of the series takes place in 1985 and takes place in an alternative history to ours. Richard Nixon is elected president for another term, the Watergate scandal has never been discovered, and the whole world is facing nuclear annihilation as a result of the US-Soviet conflict. America’s fight against criminals is helped by history-changing superheroes who, apart from Dr. Manhattan does not possess any supernatural powers. What’s more, they are not crystal clear at all, and they are far from ideal. Under the Keene Act, most of them have already retired and lead seemingly normal lives. After the mysterious death of one of them – the Comedian, his teammate Rorschach decides to discover who is behind this murder. He stumbles upon an intrigue that will soon change the fate of the whole world.

The film “Watchmen” reproduces the comic book, meanwhile, and is the director’s vision. From the group of former superheroes known from the film, we have FBI agent Silk Spectra, Doctor Manhattan and Ozymandias. In addition to them, we will see new, masked good and evil heroes. It would seem that such a series will not be successful, but “Watchmen” HBO turned out to be a bull’s-eye. It received many positive reviews, but despite excellent ratings, the producers decided not to continue the series, as a result of which viewers can only watch the first and last season.
