The Department of Culture and Language Policy of the Basque Government will increase its budget by 11.6%

The Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, Bingen Zupiria, has appeared this Wednesday in Parliament to reel off the accounts for the next fiscal year of his department.

Zupiria has recalled that his counseling will have a total 322.4 million euros, 11.6% more than this year, of which 161.5 go to EITB.

Regarding the distribution of this budget, 70.6 million euros will go to the Vice-Ministry of Culture, 69.4 million euros to Language Policy, 3.4 million to the Etxepare Institute and 12.2 million to the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports.

Between the investments 3.1 million stand out for the movable industrial heritage center, Orconera, located in Barakaldo (Bizkaia); 2 million for the Albaola Itsas Faktoria museum in Pasaia (Gipuzkoa); another 2 million for accessibility to the Sestao Blast Furnace (Bizkaia), declared cultural heritage; and 1, 2 million for the Center of Artists of Zalla (Bizkaia); and 500,000 euros for the enhancement of the archaeological site of Iruña-Veleia. In addition, 1.5 million will be contributed to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao for the acquisition of works.

Zupiria has specified that in the investments contemplated funds that could come from the European Union through the Next Generation program are not included.

The promotion of diffusion and cultural creation, with 50 million, constitutes 31% of the items that the department will manage directly. Of these, 13.7 million are focused on calls for grants and specific programs for sectors such as music, performing arts, audiovisuals, literature and illustration, among others.

For its part, the diffusion of cultural projects is endowed with 28.4 million. This section includes the Euskadiko Orkestra, the great museums and cultural centers, cultural festivals and the promotion of reading.

For its part, the Vice-Ministry of Language Policy will have 69.5 million euros aimed at promoting knowledge of the Basque language.

Zupiria has highlighted as a novelty the advance in the commitment to free studies of this language, already established for level B2. In 2022, gratuity is already marked for young people between 16 and 30 years old who certify at level C1.
