‘La cowardía de ERC’, the new book by César Alcalá that analyzes the first ten months of the Civil War

July 20, 1936 Lluís Companys He told the representatives of the CNT-FAI that “today you are the owners of the city and of Catalonia, because only you have defeated the fascist military, and I hope you will not be disappointed that at this time I remind you that you have not missed the help of the few or many loyal men of my party and of the guards and young men ”. At that time he handed over political power to his anarchist friends and he washed his hands of what might happen in Catalonia.

Cesar Alcala In this book, he covers what happened in Catalonia during the first 10 months of the civil war. A period in which an attempt was made to assassinate Lluís Companys; all those who were against collectivizations were taken to arms, as in La Fratarela; sacks were produced; eugenics was applied; Freemasons were saved and thousands of Catalans were assassinated in the rear.

The author claims that, at the time he handed over power to the anarcho-syndicalists, there begins the cowardice of ERC, as he declined to perform the functions that were proper to him. To hide the blind surrender to anarcho-syndicalism, these men began to be called “uncontrolled.” There were never uncontrolled in Catalonia, everything was perfectly controlled. Those 40,000 members of the CNT-FAI who dominated the streets of Catalonia could be many things, but not uncontrolled. Calling them that was part of ERC’s cowardly speech.

The CNT-FAI dominated public order in Catalonia; carried out atrocious religious and civil persecution; they committed repressive massacres in many Catalan towns; they collectivized and destroyed companies; they organized sacks; they practiced eugenics; and they even made a list that served as a safe-conduct not to assassinate their brother masons. They did all this, during the first ten months of the civil war, while Companys and ERC looked the other way. They tried to put an end to all this with a plan to assassinate Companys, they failed in their endeavor.

The ERC cowardice it was not due to the submission dictated by the anarcho-syndicalists. This was the result of the incompetence of Lluís Companys. He let his friends do it because he knew perfectly well that they were professionals and would carry out his roadmap without him getting their hands dirty. This was his cowardice. Not surrendering to the anarcho-syndicalists, but not having the courage to perpetrate their political and ideological pretensions.

The repression in the rear was made up. A way was sought to conceal the outrage committed. In the book César Alcalá analyzes and shows that the official figure of 8,352 murdered during the civil war falls short of reality. The cowardice of some and the murderous instinct of others caused a minimum of 26,606 deaths in the Catalan rear.
