A Polish film with a chance for an Oscar. Skolimowski’s “IO” was shortlisted

The 95th Oscars ceremony will take place on March 12, 2023, and the American Film Academy has already announced the so-called “shortlists” in ten categories, from which the official candidates for the Oscars will emerge. Among the 15 candidates in the “Best International Film” category was the production of “IO” by Jerzy Skolimowski.

In the film, we see the world through the eyes of the title donkey, who travels a long way from a Polish circus to an Italian slaughterhouse. During this time, he encounters different people on his way who treat the animal very differently. The only person IO treats as “his” is Kassandra – his trainer from the circus, with whom he has to part with at the beginning of the film. Throughout its wandering, the donkey does not lose its innocence, and the film is an allegorical story that is supposed to bring the viewers closer to the reality of animal life in the modern world.
