At the age of 21, they decided that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They did not throw words to the wind – they lived together for over half a century. Elżbieta Starostecka, the beautiful Stefania Rudecka from “Trędowata” and Włodzimierz Korcz, the author of the theme from “07 report in” or the hits of contemporary pop stars, were lucky not only in love, but also professionally. However, they did not always feel fulfilled. The composer lived for a long time in the shadow of his actress-wife.
To patch the gap from when they didn’t know each other
They were connected not only by their love for art, but also by education. They met during their studies in Łódź, where they were both engaged in two student cabarets due to their future professions. Earlier, however, at the instigation of a friend, Korcz watched a beautiful student from the acting department of the Lodz State Higher School of Film, Television and Theater named after Leon Schiller, although he himself chose a different direction. Fortunately, classes were held in a common space.
We studied in the same building. The acting department was on the ground floor. Conservatory on the first floor. They needed a pianist for the cabaret. They questioned me, and by the way, I heard that they had a beautiful girl who, as a friend said, “doesn’t lack anything.” I went to the rehearsal, looked at Elżbieta and thought that she was really pretty.

We were involved in two student cabarets at the same time. I just tried to be gallant and walked my wife from one to the other. We looked each other in the eye and after a few days we knew we had no choice.
– recalled the composer in an interview for “Uwagi”. It was a moment. One look was enough and they already felt that they were meant for each other. They would return home at midnight and, surprised to find it dawn, talked all night. As they themselves decided – they wanted to “close the gap”, make up for the lost time when they didn’t know each other yet. As twenty-year-olds, they knew that they would be together forever, and all they needed to be happy was keeping that promise.
By train to the wedding
They got married after two years of relationship, only because Korcz’s father persuaded them to hold off on the decision. They themselves wanted to get married right away. They took the tram to the wedding – they didn’t have a car, and all the taxis were busy.
We went to the stop, the tram arrived with the door open. There were so many people that it was impossible to get in. And if we hadn’t gone in, we wouldn’t have made it to the wedding. I pushed Elizabeth into the crowd, holding on to the railing myself.
– Korcz recalled in an interview with “Viva”. The future wife was not angry, she only made sure not to destroy the bouquet of flowers. The only thing that mattered to her was that from that day on they would be together forever. The secret to a long-term relationship? – If we assume that there are quarrels and disputes, and then wonderful reconciliations, this is perfect – admitted Elżbieta Starostecka. When they both began to settle down, they could afford to live in the house of the actress’s dream. Korcz built it himself.
Mr. Starostecki fights for his own
In an interview for the series “Backgrounds of Fame” TVN Korcz admitted that for many years Starostecka was professionally successful, and although the couple chooses the artist’s path they will compete with each other, he never envied her being in the foreground.
If there are two artistic professions in a marriage, there must always be some competition. I have never had a problem with the fact that for many years my wife was one of the most famous actresses in the country and no one knew about me. I just worked quietly and did what I had to do, but it brought neither fame nor special money. For many years I functioned as Mr. Starostecki. At my wife’s theater, the doorman called to me: »Good morning, Mr. Starostecki!«. It didn’t hurt at all, it made me happy!
– he said. In fact, his wife’s filmography consists of productions that have entered a certain canon today. These include “The Doll”, “Republic of Babska”, “Nights and Days” or “The Leprechaun”. Later, the actress herself chose to stay at home more often and take care of the children. At that time, the husband was leaving to conquer the stages. The Poles finally recognized Korcz’s talent. Today, the songs he wrote for Alicja Majewska or Edyta Geppert are widely appreciated and have permanently entered the history of Polish song.
I wouldn’t have achieved anything in my life, I wouldn’t have done anything if I didn’t have a place to return to and a wife who is always there. We made it together.
