Jaime Rosales makes his masterful return to the official competition of the San Sebastian Festival since 2008 with wild sunflowerscataloged as a strong sensory experience full of masculinities.

During his meeting with the press, on this 70th anniversary of the Festival, the Spanish director spoke about his first meeting with his protagonists, how the cast was chosen and how satisfied he felt with them. In addition, he commented on the interpretation of Oriol Pla -his anchor actor of him- of him in the role of Óscar: “It is the only film where I have felt afraid of someoneDuring a scene that we had rehearsed, Oriol was very into character, very angry. I was afraid that he could hit me too, impressive ”.

The story follows Julia, masterfully played by Anna Castillo, she is a young single mother of two children, who falls in love with Óscar, but as they spend time together, she will begin to rethink their relationship and if he is the person she really needs. by her side, leading her to begin a personal journey in search of her happiness.

“It is important to remove the victimhood in the character. Julia is someone very strong and resistant to the difficulties in her life, but instead of victimizing herself she looks for a solution, it is something she constantly wants to do. She is looking for a more modern manthat contributes to several factors and that takes space of his time for her, that type of man who is the one who is empowered to start a family and in the end stays with the girl, something so Hollywood”, expressed its director.

“The change of couples also has to do with learning love, through experience, trying things and people that are very different. If something fails, we look for another type of person, that variation and associated psychology interested me, referring to the type of man who was looking for a more primitive one, to later move on to a more evolved one”, he pointed out.

“I am convinced that for a relationship to last over time, one has to take a step, that centripetal difference seems very beautiful to me, because that step is taken by a male character. Anna’s character picks it up and receives it.”

Anna CastilloRegarding her previous experience for the interpretation of Julia, she indicated: “I think that there is something about the character that I have felt, I have seen mothers with a burden, who set aside their needs, their desires, because they are alone, who go ahead for the well-being of their sons, fighting mothers who, in the end, are very young and live in a patriarchal system, with very toxic masculinities, who navigate those very complicated seas. We shot in the neighborhood where I grew up, and I’ve always felt that. Women in my family, mothers who are very young who do what they can. And I have realized for about five years that it is a much more feminist motherhood now ”.

Its producer Adolfo Blanco he related how open Rosales was to his suggestions for the film: “He told us the story with a drawing, and the drawing is not the film, it was another story. The same story, but with nuances that have been changing and in Jaime we have found a receptive, talented person who, when someone suggested something, he received it. A journey with a director who wanted to make a film for the public, a permeable person to whom something could be suggested, even if it was different from his original idea for the film”, he concluded.

Wild Sunflowers In this way, it has started its competition for the Golden Shell, whose winners will be announced on September 24.
