The writer Raúl Guerra Garrido dies in San Sebastián, at the age of 87

The writer Raúl Guerra Garridonative of Madrid but who has lived in San Sebastián for decades, died this Friday in the Gipuzkoan capital, at the age of 87.

Friends of the novelist have informed EFE that Guerra Garrido has died at the San Sebastian Polyclinic, where he was hospitalized due to worsening health problems.

Guerra Garrido, who in his work addressed political and social aspects related to Basque society since the sixties, was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 2006, and also obtained, among other awards, the Nadal prize in 1976. He was honored by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council in 2019, and received the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X el Sabio.

He maintained an outstanding political activity, and was one of the creators of the Ermua Forum, at the end of the nineties of the last century.

The general secretary of the PSE-EE, Eneko Anduezahas lamented the death and has praised his work, considering that it is the “showcase of a plural and diverse country”.

For its part, the Collective of Victims of Terrorism in the Basque Country, chaired by Consuelo Ordonez, recalled that in 2019 Raúl Guerra received the Covite Award, together with fellow writer Fernando Aramburu, author of Patria. Covite has stressed that Guerra was one of the first writers to deal with terrorism in his novels.

Finally, the Government delegate in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, has shown his “respect and admiration” to the deceased writer. “Raúl Guerra Garrido was above all a writer and intellectual who never renounced his ideas despite the high price they made him pay for it,” he said.
