This journalist has already seen Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ and tells you what to expect from the movie (no ‘spoilers’)

There is great expectation about the appearance of these ten new superheroes on the big screen. Are they trying to be the new Avengers?

Earth will always be in danger in the UCM (Marvel Cinematic Universe), threatened by some form of the end of the world or villain who wants to destroy her. But with Eternals, a film that will be released this Thursday, November 4, it has become clear that the Marvel catalog will always have new superheroes to face any challenge.

Right after Avengers: Endgame (2019) put an end to a fantastic journey through the lives, conflicts and feats of a formidable group of characters, Marvel decides to shout to its fans that it is not the time to say goodbye (although this is how the funeral of the Tony Stark by Robert Downey Jr.) and puts on the table ten new figures whose main mission (in real life) will be to win the sympathy and affection of the audience, under the direction of the Oscar winner Chloe Zhao (Nomadland, 2020).

Yes, it is strange to enjoy a Marvel movie full of brand new faces (Which continue to appear until the end of the credits!), But ironically, the Eternals are not the newcomers, for they have thousands of years watching over the inhabitants of the Earth and taking care of them in different times and conflicts.

Then, Why didn’t they help in the fight against Thanos or any other war if they had the power to stop it?, is a question that crosses the mind of the character Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), who presents himself as a human being, as defenseless as any of us, in the midst of the first battles against the deviants (the new menacing creatures eager to devour and destroy).

After these first events, the heroes begin to appear and the film takes enough time to present them one by one, starting with Ikaris (Richard Madden), who at first glance looks like the leader of the team, and has a deep and charming love affair with Sersi (Gemma Chan). Another performance that generates great expectations is that of Angelina Jolie (Thena), who honors her role as a brave warrior, even when her inner world is heavily shaken.

Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) brings the dose of humor and glamor, while the characters of Sprite (Lia McHugh) and Druig (Barry Keoghan) they remind the audience that even between heroes it is permissible and valid to disagree. Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-Seok) They stand out for their wit and loyalty, and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) is immortalized as the first deaf heroine in the history of cinema, as well as the fastest. The nine rest on the matriarch of the group, Ajak (Salma Hayek), who is also her leader and spiritual guide, although that does not mean that she is infallible.

The script also invites the viewer to take a deep look at their fears, doubts and motivations, that, as in any human group, they can function as triggers. After all, staying together for millennia shouldn’t be easy, right?

They may seem like a lot of new names, but you don’t need to memorize them as the plot will quickly make them familiar to you, and as the story progresses, you will likely begin to unconsciously pick your favorites, understand them, justify them, applaud them, and perhaps condemn them as well, as certain realities also begin to reveal themselves.

Are they the new Avengers? Definitely not, but they don’t need to be to save the world. And although the audience has been used to a certain more playful and fun tone in the MCU stories, the eternal they seduce with their more dramatic personalities, conflicts and dualities, and that precise amount of heroism (capable of prevailing over any other circumstance) culminating in a grand epic finale, motivated by the decision to protect what you love.

For more surprises and nods to what’s to come, do not get up from the seat until you see the last lines of the credits. Oh, the surprises Marvel still hides! (E)
