Mariah Carey wants to trademark the title of “Queen of Christmas”. Other artists objected

The pre-Christmas period belongs to Mariah Carey every year. The singer’s hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” made her a Christmas icon. Although no one doubts that it is difficult to find another queen of Christmas in radio stations or social media, the artist wanted to make sure that no one would take this title away from her. She decided to reserve it exclusively at the patent office.

There is not only one queen

The title fight began over the 2021 holiday season. Carey, Lotion LLC, then applied for exclusive rights to the terms “Queen of Christmas”, “Christmas Princess” and the abbreviation “QOC”, but the US Patent and Trademark Office did not accept it. The American star’s application was rejected after the company representing her ignored the objection of another singer. It’s about Elizabeth Chan – an artist from New York who devoted all her work to the theme of Christmas and also calls herself the Queen of Christmas. In 2015, she released the album “Red & Green”, which ensured her relative popularity. Earlier, with the song “Fa La La”, she hit the top ten of the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and USA Today’s Holiday Chart. In total, she wrote over 200 Christmas compositions. Chan went to court in August to try to block Mariah Carey from obtaining a patent.

The rights to the title were also claimed by Darlene Love, the author of the hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”, who announced on Facebook that she was called “Queen of Christmas” before Carey made a career.

What do you mean I can’t use this title? David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, the year before “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was released, and at 81, I’m not changing a thing. I’ve been in this business for 52 years, I deserved it. If Mariah has problem, have him call David or my lawyer!

she wrote. Carey has covered Love in the past.

“Christmas is for everyone”

Chan is not a self-proclaimed queen either. This title was awarded to her in 2018 by “The New Yorker”, bearing in mind the fact that the composer released Christmas albums every year for a decade. However, she herself criticizes Carey for trying to monetize Christmas.

I firmly believe that no one should appropriate or monopolize Christmas in the way Mariah tries to do. It just isn’t right. Christmas is for everyone. People should share it.

Chan said in an interview with Variety magazine in August this year. She also added that an attempt to make the “Queen of Christmas” a trademark would have an impact not only on music, but also on other industries. Carey has been selling Christmas-themed clothes and food products for a long time.

It’s not just about the music business. She tries to exploit the trademark in every possible way – clothing, alcohol products, masks, dog collars.. If you knit a sweater that says “Queen of Christmas”, you should be able to sell it on Etsy to someone else so they can buy it for their it’s crazy.

Chan concluded.

Mariah Carey’s song, which for many has become synonymous with the Christmas atmosphere, was created in 1994. 26 years after its release in 2020 it became the number one single in the UK. In June, he caused problems for the singer – Andy Stone sued her, claiming that five years earlier he wrote a song with the same title. However, he withdrew the letter submitted to the court. The BBC has reached out to Carey for comment but has yet to hear back.
